Coos Bay School District will hold its Operation Backpack/Shoebox event again this year. The program was established several years ago to provide backpacks, school supplies and hygiene products for school children.

Individuals, families and organizations in the community are being asked to donate backpacks and school supplies. A list of supplies is posted in many local stores or call 267-3104 for a list. Many of the children need hygiene products like toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, bar soap, shampoo, cream rinse, nail clippers, brush and comb. Other needs include sweat pants and underwear for younger students who may have accidents during school hours.

Donated backpacks and school supplies will be distributed to the schools where they are most needed. School nurses distribute the hygiene products throughout the school year as needs arise, a press release said.

Monetary donations also are being accepted. Checks need to be made out to Coos Bay School District (write Operation Backpack on the memo line). All donations are tax deductible.

Economic conditions affect the children of the community. With support and contributions, the children can be helped with a backpack to carry books and supplies to school or hygiene products for their daily care. Keeping a good feeling about oneself is vital to the learning and growth of children.

Donated items can be delivered to the district office at 1255 Hemlock Ave. in Coos Bay during normal business hours (7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. during the summer).

For more information, call the district office at 267-3104.
