BOSTON — Joba Chamberlain dominated Boston in his best major league start and the surging New York Yankees now are two games behind their longtime rivals in the AL East with a 1-0 victory Friday night.

Chamberlain (3-3) allowed three singles and struck out nine in a career-high seven innings. Mariano Rivera shut down a threat in the eighth and went on to remain perfect in 26 save opportunities as the Yankees improved to 7-0 since the All-Star game.

Jason Giambi took advantage of an infield shift and hit a tapper to the spot vacated by shortstop Jed Lowrie, who was playing to the right of second base, in the third to score Bobby Abreu, who had singled and advanced to third on Alex Rodriguez’s single.

Rays 5, Royals 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Edwin Jackson surpassed his victory total for last season, and Tampa Bay snapped a seven-game road losing streak.

The Rays, who moved one game in front of Boston in the AL East, won on the road for the first time since June 29, at Pittsburgh.

Jackson (6-7), who was 5-15 last season, did not yield a hit until Billy Butler homered to center with two outs in the fifth. John Buck led off the sixth with a homer, the only other hit Jackson allowed.

White Sox 6, Tigers 5

DETROIT — Jermaine Dye hit a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth inning to lift Chicago.

The White Sox rallied to win in the ninth for the first time in 39 games this season after Carlos Guillen had put Detroit ahead with a tiebreaking homer in the seventh.

D.J. Carrasco (1-0) picked up the win by getting two outs in the eighth, and Bobby Jenks pitched the ninth for his 20th save.

Chicago, which has won three straight and 16 of 24, scored three runs in the seventh to tie the game, but Guillen put Detroit back ahead in the home half with a towering home run off reliever Nick Masset.

Angels 6, Orioles 5

BALTIMORE — Juan Rivera and Casey Kotchman homered to help Los Angeles’ Joe Saunders earn his 13th victory.

Back after missing two games on bereavement leave, Torii Hunter had two RBIs for the Angels, who led 5-0 after two innings and held on for their eighth win in nine games.

Los Angeles closer Francisco Rodriguez gave up Kevin Millar’s second homer of the game and a double to Brandon Fahey in the ninth, but retired Luke Scott on a grounder for his 43rd save, most in the majors.

Indians 5, Twins 4

CLEVELAND — Cliff Lee became the major leagues’ first 14-game winner and Cleveland ended an eight-gamelosing streak inside the AL Central.

The Twins lost their fifth straight and center fielder Carlos Gomez, who left the game with a back injury.

Spotted a four-run lead in the first inning against Livan Hernandez (10-7), Lee (14-2) allowed six hits and struck out 10 in eight innings.

Blue Jays 5, Mariners 4, 10 innings

TORONTO — Joe Inglett’s two-run single with the bases loaded in the 10th gave Toronto the win and handed Seattle its sixth consecutive loss.

Seattle went ahead 4-3 in the top of the 10th on Jeremy Reed’s RBI single.

Gregg Zaun led off the Toronto 10th against Mark Lowe (1-4) with a single to center. After two outs, Brad Wilkerson walked to load the bases before Inglett lined a shot over the head of right fielder Ichiro Suzuki.

Inglett finished 1-for-5 with three RBIs.

Rangers 14, Athletics 6

OAKLAND, Calif. — Josh Hamilton hit a two-run homer to reach 100 RBIs for the season and the Texas Rangers overcame a five-run deficit to beat the Oakland Athletics 14-6 on Friday night.

Chris Davis added three hits and a home run for Texas, which won for the fifth time in seven games and moved into second in the AL West.
