The 10th annual DuneFest in Winchester Bay runs July 30-Aug. 3, and will offer a few new wrinkles for the ATV enthusiasts who come from all over for the races, food and fun.

The event, sponsored by the Reedsport/Winchester Bay Chamber of Commerce, draws about 8,000 visitors each year. This year’s edition should be at least as exciting as in the past, chamber event coordinator Joe Mirvis said.

“This event grew very gradually over the years,” he said.

To make the ATV crowd welcome this year, Winchester Bay is going to be ATV-friendly.

“This will be the first time in the history of the event that riders will be able to take their vehicles on some of the designated streets in town,” Mirvis said. “They will have access to the town merchants and there’ll be signage and traffic flaggers to help give direction and keep things running smooth.”

Mirvis said there will be restricted hours for this access.

Other firsts at this year’s festival include freestyle specialists Liv Fast, who will perform three shows a day. There also will be an area set aside for original equipment manufacturers, along with a test track.

This year, Rock the Dunes will expand to two nights: Friday, Aug. 1, and Saturday, Aug. 2, featuring Eugene bands Avid and Damaged Jim on Friday night, with shows starting at 7:45 p.m. on the main stage. Saturday’s entertainment will feature Salem band J.T. and the Tourists, with Paul Biondi and Kolvane from Portland at 7:45 p.m. at the main stage.

This year also will feature a kid-safe zone and riding area, with safety classes provided.

Even with all the vendors, music and food, racing is the main attraction at DuneFest.

“The races will be geared to all ability levels, so no one is left out,” Mirvis said. “From beginners to experts, everyone will be able to compete. This festival is for everyone.”
