MEQUON, Wis. — St. Louis Rams running back Steven Jackson, entering the final year of his contract, was a no-show for the opening day of training camp on Friday.

Coach Scott Linehan said Thursday after the team arrived at its new training site in suburban Milwaukee that Jackson had told him he would not be on the team charter flight from St. Louis.

The coach apparently was unaware that Jackson didn’t make his own arrangements, either.

Linehan also said Thursday that getting a contract extension for Jackson was a “priority.” The team has been in contact with Jackson’s agent.

“I know within the last couple days there has been dialogue,” Linehan said Thursday. “Our hope is that will be done pretty soon.”

Jackson was considered a holdout after missing the initial team meeting Friday morning, the team said on its Web site. The Rams’ first practice at Concordia University was Friday afternoon.

Jackson is in the final season of a five-year contract he signed after the Rams drafted him in the first round in 2004. He has had three straight 1,000-yard rushing seasons after totaling 1,002 last year despite injuries that sidelined him for four games.

Candian Open

OAKVILLE, Ontario — Chez Reavie finished the rain-delayed first round of the Canadian Open with a 6-under 65 on Friday and had a 64 in the second to take a two-stroke lead over Eric Axley.

At 13-under 129 the 26-year-old PGA Tour rookie matched the tournament record for the first 36 holes set by Scott Dunlap in 1996 when Glen Abbey played to a par of 72. The 129 total also matches the best on the PGA Tour this year.

Axley, one of 63 players unable to finish the round, was 11 under with a hole left when play was suspended because of darkness.

Nicholas Thompson was 9 under with a hole remaining. Billy Mayfair (68-66) and Steve Marino (67-67) were in the clubhouse at 8 under, and Briny Baird and Brian Davis also were five strokes back. Baird had five holes to go, and Davis had one left.

Champions Tour

TROON, Scotland — American Bruce Vaughan shot par 71, taking a one-shot lead after the second round of the Senior British Open before heading for therapy on his troublesome left knee.

Vaughan, who has undergone three partial knee replacements over the past two years, totaled 3-under 139. John Cook (71) is one stroke back.

Vaughan had two bogeys, which he followed with birdies. The former firefighter, who took up golf at 20, is aiming for first major win on the senior tour.

Tom Watson (71), Bernhard Langer (71) and Eduardo Romero (73) were another stroke back under windy conditions at Royal Troon links. Greg Norman shot a 72, including an eagle at the 16th, to finish eight strokes off the leader.

LPGA Tour

EVIAN-LES-BAINS, France — Helen Alfredsson shot a course-record 9-under 63 to pull within a shot of leader Angela Park after the second round of the Evian Masters.

Park shot a 68 in her second straight bogey-free round, giving her a 10-under total of 134.

The 43-year-old Alfredsson made four birdies on the front nine and five on the back at the Evian Royal Resort to beat the old course mark of 64 held by six players.

Five players are another shot back at 8 under — 2003 champion Juli Inkster, Cristie Kerr of the United States, South Korean duo Kim In-kyung and Meena Lee, and Candie Kung of Taiwan.

Overnight leader Lorena Ochoa was at 6 under after shooting a 1-over 73 following her 65 on Thursday.
