Gas is cheaper in Florence?

My wife and I left Coos Bay on June 22 and drove to Remer, Minn., to visit relatives. We paid $4.36 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline a gas station on the north end of Coos Bay the morning we left. We returned on July 12 after traveling 5,638 miles through 12 states. The most expensive gas we bought was here in Coos Bay on June 22 and in Redding, Calif., on July 11 at $4.49 per gallon for regular unleaded. The cheapest we bought was in Sioux Falls, S.D., at $3.72 per gallon for regular unleaded.

On Thursday, July 17, we drove to Eugene on state Highway 38. On the return trip we drove back on Highway 126 from Eugene to Florence. To our surprise, regular unleaded gasoline in Florence was selling from $4.02 to $4.16 for regular unleaded.

My point is that I have heard from gasoline dealers in this area that they have to truck it all the way from Portland to the South Coast, that is why our gas costs more.

What a crock!

Gasoline is cheaper in Brookings; at least it was when we came through on July 12. And how far do they think they have to truck it to some of the remote towns in North and South Dakota  and Minnesota. There it is cheaper!

The same fuel trucks make deliveries in Florence and then drive down the coast to Coos Bay and North Bend for deliveries. They are currently charging whatever the traffic will bear. The local gasoline dealers are screwing us.

My car gets 28 MPG. It is not much more than 100 miles to Florence round trip. I can go to Florence and back for four gallons of gas at a cost of just more than $16 Florence price, plus it is a nice drive and we can do our shopping and maybe even get lucky at the Three Rivers Casino, if we are so inclined.

If more people started to make this drive to Florence, maybe the distributors will wake up and start giving the people of the South Coast the break we deserve instead on sticking it to us just because they can. Their greed may come back to haunt them.

I remember when I lived in the Bay Area questioning some station owners as to what they get for there cut from the Gasoline that they sell. I was told that it is about 1% if not just a little less than that. If you ever have noticed over the years most stations have gotten away from the automotive servicing to having stores and cafes inside instead. They make their money with the food and the other items that they sell. Some stations are going to try to make up for their loss by pricing the highest that they can for the fuel. God help you if you question the owners! They will let you know how offended they are by you asking!

Empty tank people heading north on 101, here's the worst kept secret in the area. For several years the workers at the Shell station at the intersection with highway 126 have directon from the owners (franchisee) to be lower than the town Exxon station. Generally, presently, fuel at Shell is up to 30 cents less per gallon than anywhere in Coos Bay / North Bend(including the cheap gas in Empire). The Safeway store in Florence attempts to match the Shell station. With a Shell credit card it's an additional 5% less. And, with a Safeway card it's at least 3 cents / gallon less. It's interesting to see how frequently the Shell station and Safeway change the price - sometimes hourly
