North Coos gets sweep in finale

NORTH BEND — North Coos will enter the American Legion Class A State Tournament playing some of its best baseball of the summer.

Unfortunately for the local players, they have to wait a week for the tournament after finishing the regular season with a sweep of South Eugene on Wednesday at Clyde Allen Field.

North Coos got complete games from pitchers Bryce Weidman and Jesse McClintock while posting wins of 7-1 and 10-6 on Wednesday to finish the season with a 20-17 record overall and a 12-12 record in league play. Throw in two doubleheaders forfeited by Willamette and the Waterfront’s mark improved to 24-17 heading into the state tournament, which begins Aug. 1 at Clyde Allen Field.

Several of this year’s players were on the North Coos squad that advanced to the state tournament last year in Portland, and can’t wait for a shot at the event on their home field.

“I’m excited,” said Jake Stevens of Powers, who had a double in each game Wednesday. “We’ve been playing well lately. I think we’re playing almost at the level we need to be. I think we can contend.”

North Coos looked ready in Wednesday’s doubleheader, which followed a doubleheader sweep of North Medford a day earlier at Clyde Allen Field.

Weidman pitched a four-hitter with seven strikeouts in the opener and was backed by a defense that committed just two errors.

Dalton Iveans went 4-for-4 at the plate, with a run and an RBI, while Stevens, Ryan Campbell and Nic Canaday had two hits each. Iveans, Weidman, Stevens and Campbell all had doubles in the game as North Coos scored in five of the first six innings.

The offense got off to a slow start in the nightcap, but produced three runs in the fourth and fifth innings and four more in the sixth. McClintock, meanwhile, pitched a five-hitter and was in great shape until several walks contributed to four runs in the final inning that made the final score closer than the game actually was.

“Jesse pitched a good game,” said Weidman, who also was pleased with his own effort on the mound.

At the plate, Skyler Walton had a home run, a double and four RBIs for North Coos in the second game, busting out of a recent slump.

“It was nice,” Walton said. “I haven’t had it in a while.”

Slack and Weidman also had two hits and two runs each, while Weidman drove in three runs. McClintock scored twice.

“Today we played really well,” said Weidman. “We hit the ball really well.”

With the four wins to finish the regular season, North Coos showed it was over a slump that included five straight losses and nine losses in 13 games.

Weidman said finishing the season with five straight wins — the Waterfront also beat Roseburg Pepsi in the finale of a doubleheader last week — has helped the team rebuild its confidence.

“It’s good to get a streak going before the tournament,” he said. “If we stay focused throughout the whole thing, we’ve got a chance.”

Stevens said the key will be the team’s offense, which had been off before piling up 38 runs on the final two days.

“We need to hit the ball,” he said. “We haven’t been hitting as well as we need to be. We have a pretty stacked lineup.”

North Coos might try to schedule an alumni game before the start of the tournament, and will hold several practices.

Weidman, meanwhile, will continue bouncing back and forth between North Coos and it’s sister team, Three Rivers of the Class AAA division, which is in its league playoffs this week.

“It’s so much fun,” he said of playing for both teams.

North Coos coach Brad Horning isn’t too concerned about the layoff.

“It could be good to get away from baseball a little bit — to get a little rest,” he said.

Meanwhile, Wednesday’s win gives him confidence the team is ready.

“We’ve had some pitching performances, but not strung together the offense,” he said. “Today, we got both.”

Notes: The other seven teams for the state tournament will be determined in playoffs next week. Four of them will come from Area 4, with the champions of the North and South divisions along with two other teams from among the second- and third-place teams in each division. The Waterfront split a pair of doubleheaders against each of the top two teams from the South — North Medford and Ashland — winning at home and losing on the road. North Coos was 13-5 at home this year. The Waterfront will play in the 6 p.m. game the first two days of the tournament, with other games scheduled at 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. each day.
