Community Sports, Fast Breaks for July 19: Garboden, Scheirman post top times in Kentuck Run

Steven Garboden and Megan Scheirman were the overall winners in the Kentuck Run last weekend.

Garboden, who graduated from North Bend High School this spring, covered the 15-kilometer (9.3-mile) course in 1 hour, 2 minutes and 32 seconds on a hot day with temperatures in the 80s.

Scheirman, meanwhile, led the women and was second overall with a time of 1:06:17.

Brad Morse (1:06:53) and Kori Frasier (1:17:50) were the masters (40-and-over) winners. Morse was third among men, behind Garboden and Magnus Aaserud (1:06:32). Frasier was the second woman to finish, followed by Jenny McGriff (1:23:38).

Shawn Miller won the 5-kilometer race in 17 minutes and 32 seconds, with older brother Aaron second at 20:07.

Karen Matson was the top woman and also the top female master, finishing in 23:22. Tom Johnson was the top male master in 25:38. Amy Walker was second among women in 24:34.

The overall winner in the 1-mile kids run was 9-year-old Amy Kronsberg, who finished in 7:55. Among the boys, 7-year-old Kaleb Messner finished first in 8:12.

The run, sponsored by the South Coast Running Club, was hosted by the Soroptimist International of Coos Bay Area women’s service group as a fundraiser for its CHOHPS (Children’s Oral hygiene Project for Success) program, with 100 percent of the proceeds going directly to the CHOHPS program for purchasing supplies for dental kids.

The mission of Soroptimists is the betterment of women and children.

Long-course state championships

Four Gold Coast Swim Team members competed in the 10-and-under Long Course State Championships at Albany last weekend.

Karl Stuntzner-Gibson finished fifth in two different events. Cassie Dallas also was fifth in one race. Makayla Proett and Grace Knutsen also competed.

Bonney & Clyde Tournament

Tom and Darlene Sinclair teamed to win the A Flight in the annual Bonney & Clyde tournament at the Coquille Valley Elks Lodge.

The annual tournament was sponsored by the Elks Ladies Golf Association and was held over Fourth of July Weekend.

Craig and Denece Johnson took low-net honors in the A Flight.

In the B Flight, Brad and Audrey Saxon took low-gross honors and Ken and Bette Johnson won low-net honors.

Women’s amateur

Southwestern Oregon Community College golf coach Marie Simonds was among a number of women from Oregon who tried to qualify for the U.S. Women’s Amateur in a one-day qualifier held on Wednesday at the Portland Golf Club.

Simonds tied for 41st with her score of 85 on the day. The top two scores were turned in by Canadians Caroline Kim (70) and Kira Meixner (71).
