Curry County Fair

The 2008 Curry County Fair will be Thursday through Sunday, July 24-27, at the Event Center on the Beach in Gold Beach.

Armbands for the all-day carnival rides will be available each day.

Public awareness

Southern Oregon Coast Housing Opportunities Provider will have a booth in the community tent at the Coos County Fair from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.  Saturday.

Visitors to the booth will learn about all of the organization’s services and programs, including the no-cost private budget, credit and homeownership counseling; financial fitness classes; funding for down payment assistance programs;  and 0-percent interest with deferred payment home repair loan program, pre- and post- purchase education courses.

SOC-HOP is a branch office of Umpqua Community Development Corp., a nonprofit organization that utilizes funding from Oregon Housing and Community Services to provided free housing counseling to the residents of Coos and Curry counties.

Selling books

The Myrtle Point Public Library Foundation will hold a used book sale from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday  and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Oregon State Extension office, the Ohlsen-Baxter Building, 631 Alder St., Myrtle Point.

 The “buck a bag” sale will take place Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m.; participants can fill a bag for $1. Proceeds from the book sale go to the Myrtle Point Public Library Foundation. For more information call the library at 572-2591.   

Sustaining gardens

The Sunset Garden Club of Port Orford invites people to its seventh-annual Garden Tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

This year’s theme is “Gardens That Sustain Us,” featuring vegetable and fruit gardens, as well as information on how to build raised growing beds.  

 Tickets/maps are on sale at Downtown Fun Zone in Port Orford, or in advance by calling (541) 332-3860.

Fair reading

The Myrtle Point, Dora and Powers libraries will offer children’s reading programs at the Coos County Fair beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday under a small canopy next to the larger one show casing Myrtle Point, Powers and Dora. The programs will include reading, crafts and prizes.

Programs for preschool children are scheduled from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays at the Myrtle Point library.

School-aged youth can come to the Myrtle Point library from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Monday

Assisting nurses

A Nursing Assistant Class consisting of 80 hours of classroom instruction and 80 hours of clinical training will begin Monday, July 28.  Classes will be held from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, in classrooms at Lower Umpqua Hospital, 600 Ranch Road. Clinical training will take place from 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Extended Care of Lower Umpqua Hospital. A criminal history check is required. Vacation Bible School

“Grab your paddle and travel to ‘Outrigger Island’” as the Wave Riders surf the big waves of a Hawaiian theme vacation Bible school to find the “Living God’s Unshakable Truth.”

The vacation Bible school will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, July 28-Aug. 1, at First Baptist Church, 2080 Marion Ave., North Bend.

The VBS is open to all children age 5 through sixth grade.

Lunch will be provided to the students by the County School District Program. A pre-registration Fun Day is scheduled for 11 am. to 2 p.m., Saturday at the church.

A family night will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 31, to present programs to the parents and friends.

Wild camping

The Boy Scouts of America, Chinook district, will host its summertime Cub Scout Day Camp Monday through Thursday, July 28-31, at Tugman State Park in Lakeside.

The theme is “Wild, Wild West.” The camp is open to boys first through fifth grade. Activities will include archery, swimming, and more.

Monday through Wednesday, the camp will go from 9 a.m. to 4:10 p.m. Thursday’s activities will begin at noon and end at 5:30 p.m., when parents can join the boys for a barbecue dinner, followed by a campfire ceremony.

The costs is $70.

Coming soon

Green camp

Growin’ Yer Grub Summer Day camp for children who have just completed third to fifth grades will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 4-7 in Coquille and Aug. 18-21 in North Bend. The camp costs $35, which includes planting and cooking materials as well as daily swimming.

The camp will teach kids how to grow their own food and what to do with it after they grow it. Camps are limited to the first 20 students. Registration must be in by Friday for the Coquille camp and Aug. 8 for the North Bend camp.
