Coos County celebrated the opening of a new Coquille Annex building Monday.

Former Coos County Commissioner Bev Owen was on hand to celebrate the opening of the Coquille Annex in the newly-named Owen Building, previously known as the Pincinatti Building. The county named the annex building after Owen, who served two terms on the county commission.

The new county annex building, located at 225 N. Adams St. in Coquille, will house the county planning department, Veterans' Service and the water resource department.

At the opening, Owen served cake made to look like the signs for the new building.

BUDGETING FOR THE FUTURE wrote on Jul 23, 2008 10:16 PM:

So if you have been reading the paper the elected Sheriff is pushing a Tax Levy for several million dollars. The interesting part is he is asking for more then he lost. It is about time the Commissioners are budgeting for the future so we don't fall into the same situation that the schools have done. Look at Coos Bay, didn't do maintenace, didn't repair or keep up with infrastructure so they are asking for $59 million in November. The commissioners at least took the money they got extra for one year and invested it wisely so they didn't have to ask voters for money for infrastructure. So Dumb as Dirt and Cora should ask themselves, so you complain when they are investing wisely, and you complain when they don't, my suggestion is run for Sheriff if you want to see a difference, don't blame the ones who are budgeting for the future.

So the county does not provide any fire services, so you need to get your facts and opinions correct. Thank goodness there was money invested in infrastructure in this county. So if you weigh the options, invest in 5 deputies for 12 months and they are gone, or invest money in infrastructure that will last for years. Keep in mind the county has been remodeling the building since 1989. Finally, they woke up and smelled the coffee and finished it before the costs kept going up. Maybe the commissioners are starting to see the light of wisdom. Keep up the good work.

Keep in mind Mr. Dumb, the employees who work in the newly remodelled building, which includes myself, also pay taxes.

I would even guess I pay taxes more than you do.

Did you happen to see the building they moved out of? It should be condemned. At least now these employees can have a safe, healthy environment to work in and we don't have to worry about any health related lawsuits down the road.

Police and Fire protection are very important but the powers that be have to consider other agencies as well.

Besides, there was a lot of "waste" from the sheriff's dept cut that we're not missing. Jailers that sat on their rears and played pc games their entire shifts.

Yeah, people need to get a clue and we paid for the cake. I quarantee they'll ask us for more money on the next ballot. Any wagers????

dumb as dirt wrote on Jul 22, 2008 7:51 PM:

I don't get this?

We just had a big deal, the County budget. We lost police and fire protection. Now we have a nice new facility to house a couple agencies?

I think we would have been better off with several more deputies instead of a new/remodeled building?
