Garden clubs award two scholarships

The Coos Bay Garden Club awarded its 2008 scholarship to Sonia Kenyon, a 2008 graduate of Marshfield High School.

Sonia plans to attend Southwestern Oregon Community College, before moving on to Oregon State University. Her goal is to major in biology and after college pursue a career in genetic research. A big love in Sonia’s life is volunteering at Free Flight, a rehabilitation center for wild birds and marine mammals. Sonia is part of Free Flight’s education team and teaches the public about the importance of protecting and respecting the environment so that the birds will have a safe habitat.

Michelle Schultz, a North Bend High School graduate, is the 2008 recipient of a scholarship offered yearly by the North Bend Garden Club. Michelle plans to attend Oregon State University and major in pre-veterinary medicine.

The North Bend club raises money for the scholarships through a Christmas Sale, a plant sale on Mothers Day weekend and its annual rummage sale. To learn more about the club, go to http://www.gardencentral.org/oregon/northbendgardenclub.
