North Bend High School announced its 2008 representatives for Boys’ and Girls’ State.

During the week-long program sponsored by the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary, students learn about governmental processes and procedures at the city, county and state levels. They do this by setting up their own governments and administering them according to the laws of the state of Oregon.

Both programs are designed to be hands-on with role playing and active participation as the primary mode of learning. Among other activities, Boys’ and Girls’ State citizens will participate in Legislative sessions, campaigning, party rallies, debating and voting. In addition, prominent guest speakers from government and industry share their experiences and knowledge with the young men and women.

Previous citizens from North Bend High School describe the week as a “life-changing experience.”

The teens attending Girls’ State at Willamette University were Josse Crismon, Blair Davis, Karen Fowler, Rebecca Gatlin, Skye Gilbreth, Amanda Keith, Tasha Livingstone, Gwen Rogers, Amanda Rudd and Melissa Swagerty. Students attending Boys’ State in June at the University of Oregon were Trevor Berrian, Brennan Bishop, Dan Flora, Cris Hernandez, Andrew Langenstein, Zach Martin and Cole Young.
