Three Rivers pounded host Albany 18-1 in seven innings on Friday to improve its playoff chances in the Zone 3 American Legion race.
“It feels good,” said Three Rivers coach Alex Morales. “You always worry coming into a game against a team that you’ve beaten twice that the guys could think they are going to just show up and win.
“They came out ready to play and pounced on them and stayed on them.”
Tyler Mais went 5-for-6 with two home runs, including a grand slam, and two doubles. Mais scored five runs and drove in six.
Willie Grader pitched a complete game, giving up six hits. He struck out one batter and walked another.
Three Rivers pounded out 20 hits. Cole Skriver was 4-for-5 with two runs and three RBIs. Drew Rainwater was 3-for-5, including a double, and scored twice. Rye Espinosa was 3-for-4, including a double, and scored twice while driving in three runs.
Three Rivers improved to 7-6 in league play with two games to go, and Friday’s win could go a long way toward a spot in the playoffs.
“It could be big,” Morales said.
Three Rivers hosts Withnell Dodge today at 3:30 p.m. in Florence in another big game. Withnell Dodge (7-4) took the first two games in the series.
The league season ends Monday with a game at Springfield, which split the first two games with Three Rivers, but trails the Sandblasters in the standings, with a 5-7 record.
The top four teams from the final league standings reach the playoffs.
