The North Coos Waterfront used a dramatic seventh-inning comeback to snap a five-game losing streak Wednesday and beat Roseburg Pepsi for the first time this season.
The Roseburg club won the opener 8-1 at Clyde Allen Field, but North Coos rallied to win the nightcap 5-4 with four runs in the seventh.
With one out in the final inning, Andrew Slack hit a triple. He scored on a single by Ryan Campbell. That was followed by a single by Dalton Iveans and a walk by Bryce Weidman to load the bases. Jesse McClintock brought in Campbell with a single to pull North Coos within 4-3.
Nic Canaday then hit a grounder, and Roseburg’s first baseman tried to throw to the plate to force Iveans at home. But Iveans beat the throw, which went wide of the catcher, allowing Weidman to score the winning run.
“It was nice,” said North Coos coach Brad Horning. “The kids were relieved.”
North Coos was in the midst of a slump that saw the team lose twice to Roseburg Horizon last Friday and then get swept by Sheldon on Monday in Eugene. In the second game of that doubleheader, North Coos took a 16-10 lead into the bottom of the seventh, only to see Sheldon score seven runs. The Irish won the opener 7-5.
North Coos now stands at 10-12 in league play and 16-17 overall with two doubleheaders remaining at Clyde Allen Field. North Medford visits the Waterfront on Tuesday, followed by a makeup twin bill against South Eugene on Wednesday.
North Coos also hosts the Class A state tournament, starting Aug. 1.
Roseburg led all the way in the opener, scoring twice in the first inning.
Elliott Aurdahl had a triple for the Waterfront and scored the team’s lone run in the second inning, when he singled and later scored on a single by Canaday.
Slack got North Coos on the board in the nightcap in the third inning, when he singled and stole second. He moved up on a wild pitch and scored on a grounder by Dalton Iveans.
Slack, Campbell and McClintock each had two hits in the win.
In Monday’s doubleheader loss at Sheldon, Slack had three runs and McClintock four during the wild second game. Weidman had two hits and four RBIs and Campbell and Joe Harris each scored twice.
