Fred Meyer is asking the city of Coos Bay to subsidize construction of a new store at its current location on South First Street. If the city says no, the department store chain may decide to build at a different site.

Fred Meyer officials are seeking up to $2 million in urban renewal funds, said Melinda Merrill, a spokeswoman for Fred Meyer Stores. The company wants to improve the appearance of its storefront and would add about 20 union jobs following construction. The new facility would be about 15,000 square feet larger than the existing one, Merrill said, providing shoppers more selection in almost every department. She noted these objectives are all in keeping with the urban renewal district’s goals.

Mayor Jeff McKeown said it would be nice to see such improvements, though he isn’t sure the city is in a position to provide $2 million to one business.

The city asked Fred Meyer to come back with an appraisal of the new building’s property tax output.

City Manager Chuck Freeman, who has spoken with Fred Meyer officials off and on for months, said the appraisal would let the city determine how much more tax revenue the new building might generate for the urban renewal district.

The existing building, which is within the downtown urban renewal district, has sat at the south entrance to Coos Bay since 1971. The store employs 145 people, Merrill said.

She said Fred Meyer hopes to make a decision about where to build a new facility by the end of the year. The company is focusing on the First Street site, though not exclusively.

“We love being in Coos Bay,” she said. “It’s just, the project’s got to pencil. That’s why we are looking at all our options.”

Fred Meyer has not signed any contracts, Merrill said, though it is considering off-site locations.

She said Fred Meyer usually spends about $30 million when building a new store, though the site location can make it more or less expensive.

“It’s a very rough figure,” she said.

Any funding provided by the urban renewal district would be used for the public benefit, she said, such as infrastructure or road improvements.

Merrill said the company is preparing its appraisal, though she is unsure when it might be ready.

“It’s hard to appraise something that doesn’t exist,” she said.

Fred Meyer is owned by Kroger, which has its headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio.

I was discussing this with a friend who filled me in on some information he found while researching. Kroger, the company who owns Fred Meyer, has $70.23 billion in revenue which is more than enough to facilitate a new store in the area. $2 million is pocket change to the company but a heck of a lot for Coos Bay to put towards one business. Seems like they should pay for this out of their pockets.

I'm all for Fred Meyer getting a makeover - I'd say it's long overdue. However, what I'm really curious about is whether Fred Meyer is actually in need of the $2 million to do it or are they just looking for a hand-out? It's not like Coos Bay has loads of money sitting around.

To:NVNV, Who pulled your chain you don't even live here!!! Better yet why don't you give Fred Meyer the $2million.

Home Depot isn't coming because they are struggling, they just used a loophole to back out. With construction down across the country all of those types of stores are struggling. Fred Meyer has been talking about a new store forever, the current location is just too small and floods. If anyone recalls the city attempted to use eminent domain last year on the south end of town to obtain them a piece of property, which was soundly rejected. I don't think that it would be bad for the town to invest some money in the project but it will need to be WELL JUSTIFIED. As far as them going to North Bend, Coos Bay won't let that happen, they need Fred Meyer's. It would be a sad day for CB if they left, even to across town.

NVNV wrote on Jul 17, 2008 10:08 AM:

Down here in Nevada this is done on a daily basis. We just spent 2mil + on building a Burlington Coat Factory and a Sportsman's Warehouse, millions on Cabela's in Reno, and I don't know how much for the new mall in Sparks. I would have to say though that the Freddy's in Coos Bay has to be among the most outdated in the chain (I would rank the one on Glisan St. in Portland more so except they just remodeled it) and that this would be a boon to CB to have a nice FM in town. Yes, 2 mil is a lot but that is a small price to pay for the rehab of the S. end of CB's image.

New Jobs wrote on Jul 17, 2008 9:42 AM:

If they are adding 20 new jobs and probably not high paying, lets say 10 bucks an hour that would be $20,800 a year per job. or $416,000 per year.

So our 2 million should be able to almost pay the payroll for these employees for 5 years.

Talk about a sweetheart deal, we the taxpayers take on the burden of 20 more employees, Fred Meyers gets the perks.

What say you Coos Bayers?

I agree with NB wrote on Jul 17, 2008 9:16 AM:

I have to say I agree with NB. The site that the Home Depot was originally slated to fill would be a prime location for a new store. It would really clean up that area of town and put it to good use. Right now it's sad to see it so unused and neglected. I say they should do it!!! There will be plenty of room for a new bigger store and loads of parking!

Money Spent wrote on Jul 17, 2008 8:20 AM:

It seems to me that putting 2 million into this business would not really do much for our economy, but if they took that same 2 million to encourage new business that would help. Would Home Depot come if we gave them a "perk" and how many long term jobs would that make

moonpenny wrote on Jul 17, 2008 12:14 AM:

YES!

One of the few retailers that have stayed in our community. They have quality product and serve this town well.

Coos Bay Resident wrote on Jul 16, 2008 5:28 PM:

I have to agree with the NB CITIZEN, is Fred Meyer out of their minds. Why should urban renewal funds pay to build a new Fred Myer or even tax payers money? I respectfullfy ask that the city council rejects their request for the $2million that Fred Myer is requesting for. If anyone thinks it is a good idea, let them donate the $2 million to Fred Myer themselves. I DIDN'T THINK SO!!!

Resident wrote on Jul 16, 2008 5:15 PM:

Where does it say these 20 jobs would be "family wage" jobs? Union employees can be part-time workers too.

NB Citizen wrote on Jul 16, 2008 3:53 PM:

They're kidding right? Why should taxpayer money be used to subsidize the profits of a for profit corporation - on the promise of a few "family wage" jobs... BAD Precedent to set if this comes to fruition... hopefully the City Council will give this the due consideration this whacky idea deserves...

ATR wrote on Jul 16, 2008 3:42 PM:

Wish this could happen. It's about time we had a decent Fred Meyer. Go anywhere else and they are all updated with lots more selection.

NB wrote on Jul 16, 2008 2:57 PM:

Bring the new expanded store up to the Home Depot site in North Bend with 101 access.

fred meyer shopper wrote on Jul 16, 2008 2:05 PM:

I do all my shopping at Fred Meyer and i would love to see the store improve. I think it would be a great use for the money.

Pro-Renewal wrote on Jul 16, 2008 1:59 PM:

Yep and while we're at it --- let's give every business in CB some of the Urban Renewal money... heck why can't I have some? Fred Meyer needs to pony up their own money just like every other business owner and not try to extort money from the taxpayers... what is this... give me money to build my new store or I'll go somewhere else? Where else would/could they go? North Bend?

Gene wrote on Jul 16, 2008 1:43 PM:

CB, you got that right.

More jobs wrote on Jul 16, 2008 1:22 PM:

This probably won't happen because it would bring more jobs to the area. Actually use urban renewl funds to help the area??? What a concept!

WHATEVER wrote on Jul 16, 2008 12:31 PM:

I agree. I like Fred Meyers. Easy to get in and out and they have a decent selection of everything that I need

Former FM Employee wrote on Jul 16, 2008 12:16 PM:

Fred Meyer has been talking the "new store" for years. City of Coos Bay is holding them back. There is no way they are going to give $2Million for "Urban Renewal" The PTB (Powers that Be) don't want Urban Renewal. No new businesses will come into this town unless something is done to entice the businesses to stay once they are here. And the ones that are here won't stay unless there are customers to shop.

CB wrote on Jul 16, 2008 11:40 AM:

Sounds like a good idea to me, we could use a bigger Fred Meyer and it would be a better use of urban renewal funds than Coos Bay usually uses the funds for.
