Relay team second at triathlon

The Coos Bay team of Max Stuntzner-Gibson, Charles Hubris and Mark Gagnon finished second in the team competition of the Pacific Crest Half-Ironman Triathlon in Bend on June 28.
The triathlon was part of the two-day Pacific Crest Sports Festival, which included several individual and team events.
The event drew more than 600 individuals and 28 relay teams and was contested in record temperatures soaring over 100 degrees.
The group, called Team Multi-Taskers, finished second overall with a time of 4 hours, 59 minutes and 5 seconds. The winning team, Team Beavers, consisting of Corvallis residents Pamela Johnson, Matthew Hallowell and Paris Edwards, finished in 4:58:12.
Stuntzner-Gibson, a 13-year-old Coos Bay student, started the event for Team Multi-Taskers by completing the 1.2-mile swim in 26 minutes and 28 seconds — fifth best among all swimmers. Hubris completed the 58-mile cycling course that circled Mount Bachelor in 2 hours, 54 minutes and 12 seconds.
Running in the heat of the day, Gagnon was timed in 1 hour, 36 minutes and 16 seconds for the half-marathon course, the 15th best time of the day.
The three relay teammates were among a number of South Coast residents who made the trip to Bend for the sports festival.
Recent Marshfield graduate Jared Bassett finished 16th in the Olympic Duathlon, which included a 28-mile bike ride and 10-kilometer road run. Bassett was timed in 2:11:49.
Jeremy Sisneros of Coos Bay was 75th in the half marathon, with a time of 1:42:01.
Thomas Holt of Coos Bay was the top individual finisher in the half-ironman triathlon in 6:19:27. Matthew Larson of Coos Bay was the best local finisher in the Olympic triathlon, which included a 1,500-meter swim, 28-mile bike ride and 10-kilometer road race. He was timed in 3:11:09.

Tomac stands out
Local masters swimmer Jayna Tomac won three events and was part of a record-setting relay team in the recent Summer Sizzler Long Course meet at Mount Hood Community College.
Swimming in the same pool where the Outdoor Masters Championships will be held in August, Tomac swam the 100-meter breaststroke leg as part of the combined 160-199 age group 400-meter mixed medley relay. The group, which must include two men and two women and average 40 years old, finished in 4 minutes, 32.30 seconds to break the national record by nine seconds.
Tomac also swam four individual events. She won the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 50 breaststroke in the 35-39 age group. Tomac was second in the 200 freestyle.
The Outdoor Masters Championships will be Aug. 14-17.
