A Coos Bay family has been left without a home after a fire destroyed part of their house Saturday morning.

At 5:24 a.m., Coos Bay firefighters responded to 705 Edwards St. in Coos Bay to a report of an attic fire at the home. When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke had engulfed the building and was escaping from the eaves. Fourteen firefighters had the fire under control in about 25 minutes and kept the flames limited to the living room, Fire Chief Stan Gibson said. Fire crews remained on scene for about three hours investigating and cleaning up the scene.

A fire department spokesman said the house belonged to Thomas Ehlin, his wife and two children. The family was out of town at the time. The house and contents suffered an estimated $400,000 in fire and smoke damage, Gibson said. The owners have insurance on the house and no other structure were threatened by the fire.

Gibson said the cause of the fire is under investigation, but it is believed to be accidental and have burned for some time before it was discovered. The family didn’t require assistance finding a place to stay.
