An Aberdeen, Wash., man was hurt Saturday, following an accident in which his all-terrain vehicle collided with a truck.

At 7:41 p.m. emergency crews responded to Hauser Depot Road to a report of an accident in which a 1984 Toyota pickup, driven by Jeffrey Parker, 37, of Coos Bay, hit two ATVS.

One of the riders, Kurt Schaefer, 37, of Aberdeen suffered a broken leg and was taken to Bay Area Hospital. He was treated and released.

Coos Bay Police officers arrested Parker on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants, reckless driving and failing to perform the duties of a driver. He was taken to the Coos County jail, booked and released.

How do you get a reckless driving citation in the sand dunes? Sounds like the people on the wheelers should have been cited.

I was there, and Jeff Parker did not hit those ATV's, they hit him. I was a 1st responder, and those two bikes were going wide open coming out of a clearing, into a trail of whoops. He was headed out of the whoops, not fast. The 1st bike hit the bike's left back tire with the truck's front left tire. The second one did not even slow down and hit the front left fender and flew over the hood. He did not break his leg either! It was gashed pretty good, but not broken. Jeff was told to move his truck so emergency crews were able to get through, and he stayed, did not run, and was arrested. I don't believe the bike riders had to do a breathalizer test......so what's fair here. It's always out-of-towners that get hurt, because they go too fast, and don't know the sand. The police questioned no-one but the people from Washington. There are witnesses, and I hope Jeff is vindicated with these charges, especially since you are not required to even exchange information in the sand dunes.
