The Three Rivers Sandblasters reached the semifinal of the Papa’s Pizza Tournament in Eugene by beating Oroville, Calif., on Friday.
Scott Buche picked up the win with three innings of scoreless relief and Ethan Ottemiller drove in the winning run with a sixth-inning double as the Sandblasters took a 4-3 victory and the top seed from their pool in the tournament. They play the Utah Marshalls at 5 p.m., with the winner advancing to the championship game later in the evening.
After being pounded in the opener by Treasure Valley, Three Rivers posted back-to-back victories.
“I’m happy about the way we bounced back and played after the first game,” said Three Rivers coach Alex Morales. “It was a pretty poor effort on our part. We responded well.”
Three Rivers took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Travis Iverson and Kevin Warren hit back-to-back singles and advanced on a wild pitch. They both scored on a single by Drew Rainwater, and he later scored on a single by Tyler Mais.
Oroville answered with three runs in the bottom of the second, and neither team scored again until the sixth. That’s when Cole Skriver singled and later came across the plate on Ottemiller’s double.
Buche pitched up the win on the mound in relief of Chase Meister, who pitched the first four innings. Buche had five strikeouts and allowed just one hit and one walk in his three innings.
Morales isn’t sure what he will do today in terms of pitching, especially if Three Rivers reaches the championship game. The Sandblasters will have played six straight days and have league games on Tuesday against Withnell Dodge and Wednesday against Salem Post 9.
“It should be interesting,” Morales said. “We’ll probably run out of pitching.”
Tyler Mais had two hits for Three Rivers in the win. Dusty Davis pitched a complete game for Oroville.
