With six hits from Tyler Mais and contributions from throughout the lineup, the Three Rivers Sandblasters came up with a huge win Monday, topping league-leading Richey’s Market 16-12 in an American Legion game at Florence.
Mais went 6-for-6, including a double, and scored four runs, while driving in two more. Every other starter had at least one hit for Three Rivers, and the Sandblasters scored in the first seven innings, with at least two runs in six of them.
Three Rivers coach Alex Morales described the contest as “another crazy game in Florence.”
“You just never know what you might see when you show up at this ballpark,” he said. “We score in every inning but one and the other team still brings up the tying run in the ninth.”
Three Rivers led 16-7 after the seventh inning, but Richey’s Market scored twice in the eighth and three more times in the ninth before Scott Buche got the final out for the Sandblasters.
Willie Grader pitched well for four innings before running into trouble in the fifth when the Sandblasters had an error and two other bad hops led to singles for the Corvallis team.
Chase Meister came on in relief and pitched 3 1-3 solid innings, giving up two runs on three hits. Buche pitched the ninth.
Three Rivers had a big night at the plate with 21 hits. Alex Clark went 2-for-3 with three walks. He scored twice and had two RBIs.
Drew Rainwater, who left Sunday’s game with a wrist injury and then woke up with a fever, still played all nine innings at shortstop and had two hits on offense.
Rainwater, Mais, Buche, Cole Skriver, Kevin Warren and Rye Espinosa each had one double, while Ethan Ottemiller hit a triple for Three Rivers.
Aaron Corwin and Nathan Williams each had three hits for Richey’s Market.
Three Rivers improved to 4-5 in Zone 3 play, while Richey’s Market dropped to 7-3, still in first place. Withnell Dodge is 5-3 and the Springfield Titans are 4-4, along with Salem Post 9.
“It was a good win,” Morales said. “Now we have to let it go and get ready to play another league game tomorrow.”
The Sandblasters host Springfield tonight with a chance to move up in the standings.
“Springfield beat us earlier in the year, and they are ahead of us in the standings,” Morales said. “We only have six league games left, so they are all big now.”
After tonight’s game, Three Rivers spends the next four days at the 33rd-Annual Papa’s Pizza Invitational at North Eugene High School.
After tonight’s game, Three Rivers will have just two home league games remaining — July 16 against Post 9 and July 19 against Withnell Dodge. The Sandblasters also have a home game against the Eugene Challengers on July 22 and a fundraiser alumni game against the Dusters on July 23.
The other remaining league games are July 15 at Withnell Dodge in Salem, July 18 at the Albany Rockets and July 21 at Springfield.
The Zone 3 tournament, which includes the top four teams, startsJuly 24.
