Group ready to dig into new skate park

Monday, July 07, 2008 |
The Coos Bay skate park is set to see some serious grinding. Literally.
A group of volunteers with direction from city employees will begin setting up construction equipment and removing concrete from the existing facility in Mingus Park on Tuesday, said Jim Hossley, director of public works.
A formal groundbreaking ceremony, with local dignitaries in attendance, will be held the following week, set tentatively for July 15.
“Nothing’s set in concrete, so to speak,” Hossley said.
The work will be coordinated by Jason Schomaker, who has helped lead volunteer-heavy skate park projects in Port Orford and Myrtle Point.
Janell Howard, Coos Bay’s finance director, said the project will cost about $67,000, with approximately half going to payroll and half to materials, though both will be augmented by donations.
The plan is to resurface the existing facility and will include the construction of two bowls and street elements. A second phase has been designed that would replace one of the two adjacent tennis courts, though whether it can be completed this summer as well will depend on how far the city can stretch its dollars.
Most of the money was raised by Citizens for Bay Area Youth, while the city provided an additional $10,000.
City Manager Chuck Freeman said construction of phase one should take about two months to complete.
