Garboden tops field in firecracker run

Recent North Bend High School graduate Steven Garboden bested the field in the annual Mayor’s Firecracker Run at Mingus Park on Friday.

Garboden finished the 4,000-meter course, which included three laps around the pond in the park and a loop through some of the upper trails, in 14 minutes and 7 seconds.

Former Marshfield and current Oregon Institute of Technology runner Shawn Miller was second, crossing the line in 15:10. He was followed by Coos Bay eighth-grader Connor Devereux, who was timed in 16:53.

Jay Flora was the top masters runner, finishing seventh overall, in 17:32.

Jessianne Heley, who graduated from North Bend High School this spring, edged classmate Erika Schultz and Tiffany Crutchfield as the top female finisher.

Heley was timed in 18:53, followed by Schultz in 18:57 and Crutchfield in 18:59.

Tracy Heley was the top female master, finishing in 19:07.

In the 1-mile kids run, 10-year-old Ian Bream was the top finisher, in 5:20.

Bream was followed by a trio of girls — 12-year-olds Lindsey Devereux (5:21) and Shaylen Crook (5:35) and 9-year-old Ayssa Monohon (5:52).

The second boy to cross the finish line was 7-year-old Nathan Monohon in 6:33. Carter Liu, who is 9, was next, in 6:43.

The event drew 77 runners and walkers.
