The Waterfront improved to 7-5 in league play and 11-8 overall heading into a doubleheader at Ashland on Thursday. Results of those games were not available this morning.
In the first game, Sheldon scored its two runs in the first inning, while North Coos got three in the fourth, two in the fifth and three more in the sixth.
Dalton Iveans had a one-out double in the sixth inning and Bryce Weidman walked. Jake Stevens hit an RBI single to score Iveans and Heston Altenbach followed with a single to load the bases. After Joe Harris had an RBI single, Jesse McClintock was hit by a pitch to score the other run.
In the fifth, Skyler Walton walked and scored on an RBI double by Iveans, who later came home on a throwing error.
Jesse McClintock had a one-out single in the sixth and Ryan Campbell followed with a bunt single. Walton hit a sacrifice fly to score McClintock and Iveans singled. Weidman followed with a two-run single.
Kyle Davis was solid on the mound, pitching the first six innings before Weidman struck out three batters in the seventh.
Iveans had three hits and three runs and Harris had two hits.
North Coos trailed 2-0 in the second game after the Irish scored both runs in the third inning.
The Waterfront tied the score in the fourth. Walton had a leadoff walk and stole second. Iveans reached base on an error, scoring Walton. Weidman walked and later scored on a fielder’s choice.
The game-winning run came in the sixth. Nic Canaday had a leadoff single to left, moved up on sacrifices by Campbell and Sean Jany, and scored when Walton reached on an error.
Elliott Aurdahl pitched the first six innings, allowing five hits, and Weidman picked up the save.
Sheldon entered the game 7-2.
“We had two pretty good pitching performances from the young kids,” said North Coos coach Quintin Hall. “We hit the ball. We played quite well and didn’t make the stupid mistakes. That’s what helped us out a bunch.”
The doubleheader was the first of six league twin bills at home and just the team’s second at Clyde Allen Field this season. North Coos is at home four league twin bills four straight days next week, hosting Churchill on Wednesday, followed by North Eugene, Roseburg Horizon and South Eugene.
The Waterfront also hosts Ashland this Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
