Laurie Moore keeps adding to her self-described “ecclectic coffee house.”
She has owned Java Jones Coffee House & Gallery at 757 Newmark since October and the shop is open every day but Sunday.
“The tourists, they come in and say this is something you’d expect to find in Portland, not Empire,” she said. “It’s a coffee house out of a big city. That’s my goal - to make this a destination.”
Only a portion of the “ecclectic” part has to do with the ambiance inside the eatery. Yes, there are antiques on the walls, and the paintings and sculptures of nine different artists hanging around.
The other ecclectic part of Java Jones is that they serve tacos.
And pasta, and enchilladas, and soups, bagel sandwiches and quiche.
Oh yeah, as the name suggests, they also have coffee and plenty of it.
The drink menu includes coffees and teas as well as smoothies, blended drinks, energy drinks and protein drinks.
Last Wednesday, Moore added to the Java Jones repertoire with “Green Energy Wednesday” from 6 to 8 p.m. Music and discussion about energy will be on tap.
“Green Energy Night is not just about types of alternative energy. It is also about physical types of energy. We will be having people come in and talk about how to increase our energy with food, mental and physical alternatives,” she said.
Moore and her husband Anthony and her son Andre, 16, have done a lot of work to transform the old building into a gallery as well as a coffee shop.
The Moore’s daughter Alysha played on North Bend High’s state championship basketball team.
Laurie said the family has been living in the Roseburg area for the past 13 years and that she’s been scouting out locations for a coffee house for the past five years before finding Java Jones.
The coffee house also can be used for special parties and group and civic events, according to Moore.
If all that was not enough, she’s going to be opening an outdoor patio in the next few weeks.
