Fred Meyer recalls beef

PORTLAND (AP) — Fred Meyer’s parent company has announced a recall of ground beef sold in its stores under the “Private Selection Natural” label.
Cincinnati-based Kroger’s says the “sell-by” dates on the product were listed as May 21 through July 5 of this year at Fred Meyer Stores.
The beef has been linked to Omaha-based Nebraska Beef, the supplier of products connected to E. coli illnesses in Michigan and central and northern Ohio.
Customers are being asked to carefully check the ground beef they have at home in their refrigerators and freezers.
The beef can be returned for a full refund or replacement.
Melinda Merrill, a Fred Meyer spokeswoman, said employees pulled the beef from shelves by 5 p.m. Tuesday at all stores in Oregon, Idaho, Washington and Alaska. Any potentially tainted meat will be destroyed, she added.
Merrill did not know how great of a loss the recall would mean for Fred Meyer stores, and could not quantify how much meat employees removed at the Coos Bay location.
“We’ve got to make sure what’s on our shelves is safe,” Merrill said. “We are getting ground beef from other suppliers, so we’ll have ground beef back in the stores probably by tomorrow.”
Merrill suggested that consumers with any meat under the Private Selection Natural label, with those sell-by dates, should throw it away or get a refund.
