Celebrate July Fourth with a bang

North Bend
Looking to celebrate Independence Day a day early? The Mill Casino-Hotel & RV Park is hosting a Fun, Food and Fireworks Celebration beginning at 4 p.m. on Thursday in the casino’s north parking lot, at 3201 Tremont Ave., North Bend.
The event will feature dozens of family-friendly events, a variety of entertainers and an waterfront fireworks display.
Children’s activities will include face painting, balloon artists and a large slide and bounce house. There also will be jugglers, magicians, stilt walkers and caricature artists, as well as Captain Byrde and his Wonderful Macaws.
The Mill will offer live entertainment from 4 to 9 p.m. in the outdoor Tent Pavilion. Perform-ances include the calypso steel-drum rhythms of the Pan Gypsies and the Fatinah Maysaa Belly Dancing Troupe. The U.S. Coast Guard will hold an open-water rescue demonstration at 6:30 p.m.
There will be food throughout the day, and a beer garden will be open from 4 to 10 p.m.
Come nightfall, the casino will host the annual waterfront fireworks display.
Friday
Coos Bay
The city of Coos Bay fireworks display over town will be held at 10 p.m. The fire department will launch fireworks from Eastside. They can be seen from the boardwalk and throughout downtown.
Coos Art Museum will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday.
In addition to the newly opened exhibition of photography by the late Steve Prefontaine, Friday also will be one of the last opportunities to view the Express-ions West 2008 and Reality Check: The Uneasy Still Lives of Gary Faigin exhibitions, which close this weekend.
The Egyptian Theatre will present an Authentic Silent Film Extravaganza at 1 and 6 p.m. Friday. The show will feature mini-concerts by Paul Quarino on the Mighty Wurlitzer organ. Quarino also will accompany silent films in both presentations.
James Hodges will present his show Leadership, By George! True Stories of George Washing-ton’s Ethical Leadership Princ-iples come alive through the Motivational Speeches of James Hodges, Ph.D.
At the conclusion of Dr. Hodges presentation, the Egyptian Theatre will show “Yankee Doodle Dandy” (1942) at 1 p.m.
Admission to one show is $1 and one item of food. Admission to both shows is $2 and one item of food.
Bandon
The Bandon Lions Club’s community Fourth of July celebration will begin with a parade and flyover at 10 a.m. on Friday.
The Lions’ third-annual Family Fun Day in City Park will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Children are invited to enjoy two Jump 4 Fun inflatables, along with games, face painting and balloons.
Hamburger and Polish dog meals will be served. Rootbeer floats, sodas and ice cream also will be available.
The community then will send fireworks soaring into the sky over the Coquille River at nightfall on Friday in a 30-minute show.
Scottsburg
The annual 4th of July picnic/potluck sponsored by the Scottsburg Community Service Association will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Scottsburg Park alongside the Umpqua River on Highway 38 on Friday.
Hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided. Participants can bring a potluck dish and non-alcoholic beverage. Raffle tickets will be available for a $100 gas card. The drawing will be held at the picnic.
Gardiner
The Gardiner fireworks show will blast off at 10 p.m.
The Port of Umpqua has given permission to use Steamboat Island for the fireworks display sponsored by the Friends of Gardiner Cemetery.
Western Fireworks has provided the Gardiner show with pyrotechnical operators.
