Coos Bay

Family Fun

Coos Bay will host an family fun day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at Mingus Park. The day will include a variety of activities such as fishing, children’s entertainment, therapy dogs, ponies, free swimming at Mingus Park Pool and face painting. Food will be available.

The Mayor’s Firecracker Run, sponsored by the South Coast Running Club, will begin at 10 a.m. Family competitions, including a three-legged race, will start at 1 p.m.

The city of Coos Bay fireworks display over town will be held at 10 p.m. The fire department will launch fireworks from Eastside. They can be seen from the boardwalk and throughout downtown.

Celebrate with art

In celebration of the Fourth of July Holiday, Coos Art Museum will remain open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday. Coos Art Museum is located at 235 Anderson Ave. in downtown Coos Bay. Regular museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays, and 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays.

Silent fun

The Egyptian Theatre will present an Authentic Silent Film Extravaganza at 1 and 6 p.m. Friday.

Featured in both shows will be a mini-concert featuring Paul Quarino on the Mighty Wurlitzer organ.

For the afternoon show, two Laurel and Hardy films, “The Lucky Dog” (1921) and “Liberty” (1929), with organ accompaniment by Quarino, will follow the concert. After a short intermission, James Hodges will present his show Leadership, By George!  True Stories of George Washington’s Ethical Leadership Principles.  At the conclusion of Dr. Hodges presentation, the Egyptian Theatre will show “Yankee Doodle Dandy” (1942).  The Oscar-winning film is a musical portrait of composer/singer/dancer George M. Cohan.

The evening show will begin at 6 p.m. with  Quarino’s mini-concert on the Mighty Wurlitzer organ.  A silent Charlie Chaplin film will follow with an  accompaniment by Quarino. After an intermission, there will be an encore of Hodges’ presentation as George Washington, followed by another silent Charlie Chaplin Film.

Admission to one show is $1 and one item of food for the food bank. Admission to both shows is $2 and one item of food.

North Bend

Early celebrations

Looking to celebrate Independence Day a day early? The Mill Casino Hotel and RV Park’s annual Fun, Food and Fireworks Celebration will begin at 4 p.m.  Thursday in the casino’s north parking lot.

This free event offers something for all ages with  dozens of family-friendly events, a variety of entertainers and a waterfront fireworks display.

Children’s activities will include face painting, balloon artists and a large slide and bounce house provided by Jump 4 Fun. Children of all ages will enjoy the jugglers, magicians, stilt walkers and caricature artists, as well as Captain Byrde and his Wonderful Macaws.  

Along with the strolling entertainers and fun-stations, The Mill will be offering live entertainment from 4 to 9 p.m. in the outdoor Tent Pavilion. Performances include the calypso steel-drum rhythms of the Pan Gypsies and the Fatinah Maysaa Belly Dancing Troupe. The United States Coast Guard will hold an open-water rescue demonstration at 6:30 p.m.

Along with activities and entertainment, The Mill will be serving up a number of hot-off-the-grill favorites for families all afternoon. Head Start will offer cotton candy for the younger set. The beer garden will be open from 4 to 10 p.m.

Come nightfall, the casino’s annual waterfront fireworks display will be held. This year, the casino will present a live simulcast of the fireworks show inside the casino with radio station Power107 doing a live, on-air broadcast from the casino’s waterfront dock.

Coquille

Jumping fun

The City of Coquille will have a day of activities at Sturdivant Park on Friday. Activities include a Jump for Fun for children up to age 12. Life Saver Creative Arts Ministry with its puppets, songs and dowlrods will perform at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. It is sponsored by Emmanuel Baptist Church. The Old Time Fiddler’s and Gold Coast Music Makers will perform from noon to 1 p.m. and 2 to 3 p.m.

Powers

Parades and more

White Cedar Days is here again. The annual festival is scheduled for Friday through Sunday in Powers. On Friday, festivities will kick off with a kids’ parade at 11 a.m. through downtown, followed by a kids’ carnival from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Bicentennial Park. From 2 to 9 p.m. there will be entertainment including music and a Little Miss Independence contest at 3 p.m.

Throughout the weekend, there will be vendors and food booths in Pioneer Park, a Lions Coed softball tournament in the ball park and RC Flyers at Powers Airport.

On Saturday, there will be biscuits and gravy from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Powers Senior Center. The Vintage Haulers Car Show will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with registration from 9 to 11 a.m. and a car cruise at 3:30 p.m. The City of Powers parade will wind through downtown beginning at 11 a.m. Three events will begin at noon: Lil and Gang at Pioneer Park, a horseshoe tournament at Powers Tavern and karaoke at Bicentennial Park. The Redneck Games, featuring an obstacle course, will begin at 3 p.m. Bingo will begin at 6 p.m. at the Powers Senior Center. The Lioness Snack Shack will be open throughout the day at the ball park. At 9 p.m., Dammmit Jim will take the stage at the Timberline Inn. The fireworks display will begin at dusk.

On Sunday, the Rugrats Redneck Games will begin at noon at Bicentennial Park, featuring a 3-legged race, sack race, hula hoop contest and watermelon eating contest. The lawn mower race will begin at 2 p.m. Participants should register at Jack’s Fountain.

Port Orford

Jubilee 2008

The Port Orford Jubilee 2008,  “Another Day in Paradise,” will be held Friday, through Sunday throughout Port Orford.

Highlights include the parade, at 11 a.m. Friday; arts, crafts, photo and quilt displays at the Community Building and at 755 Highway 101, throughout the weekend; a Sandcastle Sculpture contest from 7 to 10 a.m., at Port Beach; the Rotary Scholarship Pancake Breakfast from 7 to 11 a.m., at Driftwood School;  a dinghy race at 1 p.m. at Battlerock Beach; Jerry Can Race, at 2 p.m. on the top of Coast Guard Hill; and Nash Memorial Duck Race at 2:30 p.m. at the Elk River Hatchery. The Port Orford Skate Park will open at 2 p.m. in Buffington Park.

Fireworks, along with a raffle and dedications, will begin at dusk. Fifth Street access to Battlerock Beach will be closed from 6 p.m. until after the fireworks.

A Chalk Art Contest will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday on sidewalks from 20th Street to Battlerock Park. Chalk artists can pick up chalk from ‘Neath the Wind Realty.

The Annual Pet Show will be from 2 to 4:30 p.m., Saturday, at 545 W. 10th St.  

At Buffington Park, a horse exhibition and riding competition will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at Wilbur Green Arena. Coast Little League will host a time of food, games and fun for the whole family from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday at Red’s Field.

Food options include the senior center barbecue and raffle at the Port Orford Senior Center, 1536 Jackson St., from noon to 2 p.m. Friday; Masonic Lodge Fish Feed from noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the American Legion Building, 417 11th St.; Frugal Gourmet Desserts to benefit local food bank, from noon to 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Port Orford Senior Center parking lot. Frugal Gourmet Desserts will be in the Battlerock Park parking lot at 3 p.m. Friday; and a pancake breakfast by the Beachcombers from 8 to 11 a.m.  Saturday, at Beachcomber’s Cove.

Celebrating with square dancing

The Beachcombers Square Dance Club will host several events over the holiday weekend.

To kick off the weekend, they will have a float in the Port Orford parade that features square dancing to a live caller. The parade starts at 11 a.m. Friday night’s dance will begin with pre-rounds at 6:30 p.m. and square dancing at 7.

Saturday, a fundraiser breakfast will be held from 8 to 11 a.m. The meal, featuring ham, eggs and pancakes, costs $5. There will be a Plus Workshop at 1:30 p.m., and the Birthday Dance will begin at 7:30 p.m. All events will be held at Beachcombers’ Cove on Nicholson Drive, north of Port Orford.

Scott Zinser of Portland will be the featured caller. Jessie Shoffner of Bend will be the cuer.

The club is celebrating 55 years of dancing.  It was formed in 1953 and moved into Beachcombers’ Cove in 1958.

Lakeside

Car show, drawings, and fireworks

The 14th annual Lakeside Independence Day Celebration will be held Thursday through Saturday. Fireworks over the lake will begin around 10 p.m. Saturday. The weekend will feature a Street Faire, a classic car show on Saturday, drawings and a bake sale on Park Street.

Reedsport

Native stories

Master storyteller and artist Gene “Cetan Luta” (Red Hawk) Davenport, a Lakota native, will be a the Reedsport Coffeehouse, 2285 Longwood Drive, from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday.

All ages are welcome to this free event. There will be food, conversation, stories and hands-on displays.

Selling a big bang

Local members of the Family Ford Foundation, cohort 3, are selling fireworks at a booth at Price ‘N’ Pride in Reedsport. Fireworks are on sale from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Wednesday, July 2; and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.  Thursday and Friday, July 3 and 4.

Scottsburg

The annual Fourth of July picnic/potluck sponsored by the Scottsburg Community Service Association will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Scottsburg Park along side the Umpqua River on Highway 38.  Hamburgers and Hot Dogs will be provided. Participants can bring a potluck dish and nonalcoholic beverages. Raffle tickets will be available for a $100 gas card. The drawing will be held at the picnic. 

Bandon

Fun and fireworks

The Bandon Lions Club’s community Fourth of July celebration will begin with a parade and flyover at 10 a.m. on Friday.

Grand marshals for the parade will be Judy and Ron Knox, directors of the Bandon Historical Society. Parade entrees are to assemble at Ninth Street Southwest at 9 a.m. For more information on the parade, call organizer Jeff Norris at 290-5383.

The Lions’ third-annual Family Fun Day in City Park will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Children are invited to enjoy two Jump 4 Fun inflatables, along with games, face painting and balloons. Hamburger and Polish dog meals will be served. Rootbeer floats, sodas and ice cream also will be available.

Entertainment will be provided by the All Girls Impromptu Pickup Band.
