An artful Fourth of July

In celebration of the Fourth of July Holiday, Coos Art Museum will remain open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.
It is a chance to see the exhibit of Steve Prefontaine’s photography as well as the remodeled Prefontaine Gallery on the second floor of the museum at 235 Anderson Ave., Coos Bay.
In an effort to prepare for the Olympic Trials and the many Prefontaine fans expected to visit Pre’s hometown, the Prefontaine Gallery has been repainted, the floors refinished, photographs re-matted, new labels created, new lighting installed, new table top lighting installed and the conference table refinished.
Friday also will be one of the last opportunities to view the Expressions West 2008 and Reality Check: The Uneasy Still Lives of Gary Faigin exhibitions, which close after Saturday.
Since April, the museum has undergone some major remodeling with a new “look” to both the Steve Prefontaine Memorial Gallery and the Mabel Hansen Gallery.
Coos Art Museum, Oregon’s third oldest museum, has been a cultural focal point of Oregon’s South Coast since 1966.
It occupies a historic 1936 art deco US Post Office building in downtown Coos Bay and offers a range of arts activities including exhibitions, classes and lectures. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays, and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays.
