The popular annual Southwestern Oregon Youth Golf Clinic, now in its sixth year, is fast approaching.
The free clinic, at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort practice center, is scheduled for Thursday, July 17. It is sponsored by the Coquille Indian Tribe and the resort.
Danny Krossman, who helps coordinate the clinic for the tribe, said the annual event has made a difference in the quality of players on the South Coast.
“A bunch of the kids who have been coming to that have really improved,” he said, referring to junior golfers in North Bend, Coos Bay, Reedsport and Gold Beach. “They’re doing awesome.”
Between 100 and 120 golfers participate each year.
The clinic is one of three related events this summer.
Golfers who participate in the clinic will be eligible to be chosen for the annual youth golf camp, which will be held later in the summer at Coos Country Club.
The number of scholarships for the golf camp will be determined by how much money is raised at the annual Adult Golf Fundraiser Tournament at Coos Country Club on July 19. Registrations currently are being accepted for that event, which will be played in a four-man scramble format.
The clinic is free for any South Coast students, though preregistration is required. Participants will be split into two age groups.
Students 7 to 11 years old will have their check-in registration at 2:30 p.m., with the clinic running from 2:45 to 4:45.
Students 12 to 18 years old will have registration at 12:30 p.m., with the clinic from 1 to 4:45 p.m., including playing on the resort’s par-3 course at 3 p.m.
A motivational speaker will address both age groups. Each group will be divided, with golfers participating in stations on short game, putting and full swing and taking part in fun competitions.
The Adult Golf Fundraiser tournament will include up to 25 teams.
A continental breakfast will be served the morning of the tournament and an awards banquet will follow the event — both at The Mill Casino-Hotel. Awards will be presented to the top three net and gross teams, and raffle prizes and awards for long drives and closest to the pin competitions also will be handed out.
Proceeds from the tournament will go into the Southwestern Oregon Youth Golf Scholarship Fund.
The entry fee is $125 for individuals and $475 for four-person teams and includes green fees, carts, range balls, the breakfast and the awards banquet. The registration deadline is July 11.
Sponsors also are being accepted for the event.
“We’ve had a great tournament,” Krossman said. “We’re just asking them to keep up the good work so we can keep sending these kids off to great places.”
Last year, more than 15 kids were able to participate in the three-day camp because of the success of the tournament. This year’s camp will be announced in the coming weeks.
The Coquille Indian Tribe Community Center has developed a goal of today’s youth wanting to become involved in golf, and has been supported in that endeavor by sponsors including the tribe, Bandon Dunes, The Mill Casino-Hotel and other local and state groups.
Golf is a lifelong sport that appeals to people of all ages. Golf also can help create a special bond between parents and children. In addition to providing exercise, golf creates an opportunity to learn patience, self-discipline, focus and perseverance, as well as other aspects of character development.
“Golf is a great sport,” Krossman said.
