Roque Valley's air quality affected by wildfires

Monday, June 30, 2008 |
MEDFORD (AP) — Weather officials said that with more than 100 lightning-caused wildfires burning along the Oregon-California border, heavy smoke should continue in the Rogue Valley for the next few days.
The Shasta-Trinity National Forest area wildfires cover more than 45,000 acres and were only minimally contained as of Sunday evening.
Some of the smoke was coming from local fires, but Brian Ballou of the Oregon Department of Forestry said 10 small blazes totaling about 10 acres were quickly extinguished.
Temperatures in the 90s with possible thundershowers were predicted in the area today.
Ballou said smoke layers were making it hard for mountaintop fire lookouts to spot new outbreaks, but that spotter planes were having more luck.
