The North Coos Waterfront snapped a five-game losing streak by sweeping an American Legion doubleheader against host North Eugene on Friday.
The 9-6 and 10-7 victories improved the Waterfront’s record to 8-9 overall and 5-5 in league play heading into a home doubleheader against Sheldon on Sunday.
“It was nice to sweep,” said North Coos coach Quintin Hall. “We competed the whole time, so that was a good thing.”
Jake Stevens and Dalton Iveans both had big days at the plate and Stevens also picked up the win on the mound in the second game.
In the opener, North Eugene led 6-4 going into the seventh inning, but Iveans singled and Stevens hit a home run to right field to tie the game. Heston Altenbach doubled, Sean Jany had an RBI single, Skyler Walton walked, Jesse McClintock had an RBI single and Bryce Weidman hit a sacrifice fly.
“We finally pulled it out in the end,” Hall said. “We got some timely hitting, finally.”
Walton had homered in the first inning to give the Waterfront an early lead.
Stevens had three hits in the game and Jany two.
Weidman picked up the win in relief of McClintock, who pitched the first four innings and was hampered by six walks and three North Coos errors.
In the nightcap, Iveans had four hits, four runs and three RBIs for the Waterfront.
“He did the job on a couple of hit-and-runs,” Hall said.
Stevens had a double and his second home run of the day, and also pitched into the sixth inning. He allowed just two runs in the first five innings, but walked the bases loaded in the sixth, when Altenbach came on in relief.
Ryan Campbell pitched the seventh inning to pick up the save and also had a big day defensively at shortstop with five double plays — three unassisted — in the doubleheader.
“Jake pitched extremely well,” Hall said. “On top of that, we had some great fielding.”
The first pitch Sunday is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Clyde Allen Field.
“We get to play at home,” Hall said. “That will be nice.”
North Coos has played just two of its 17 games at home.
North Medford losses
North Medford swept visiting North Coos in a nonleague American Legion twin bill on Thursday.
North Medford won the opener 6-1 and the nightcap 8-4.
North Coos had just four hits against North Medford pitcher Chris Anderson in the opener.
Iveans had a pair of singles. Stevens tripled and scored the only run on a sacrifice fly by Altenbach in the seventh inning.
North Medford scored two runs in the first and four more in the fourth. North Coos pitcher Geoff Van Pulliam struck out five hitters and walked two. He gave up seven hits.
Stevens also had a triple and scored twice in the nightcap. McClintock and Campbell had two hits each. Campbell scored once and McClintock had an RBI. Iveans had a run and two RBIs.
