I live here in CB 6 months a year, and a city witha population over 8 million the other 6 months, The terminal should have been built, what you should be mad at is the satet of CB/NB. Travelers don't want to come to a dilapidated city. The roads here stink, the buildings and sidewalks are crumbling, and most people are on Welfare. N o offense, but clean up your city and people will come. It has potential to bea haven, but its a dump.

Whoa there, let's hold up a bit. This is turning into a personal snipping blog. The issue is whether we need to recall the board and demand LeTellier's immediate dismissal. There are certainly grounds based on his performance. I am in the final stages of preparing a recall effort. Legal council advises against a law suite, but recommends a recall.

I just noticed all the comments about the "Port" and thought I'd point out that the airport is it's own Special District now. (Not affiliated with the Port anymore). I was there also, but without an invitation I sat in the cold on the bench and watched the elite of Coos Bay Que up for a chance at the wine and munchies (Why was alcohol served?). There were some uninvited guest allowed in based on who they knew. I guess I don't know enough people. Why were all the kids there (With alcohol!), couldn't the upper-crust of Coos Bay afford a baby sitter. I did get accused of being a liberal while visiting with one of the attendees outside for a smoke. Let's clear that up right now. To Esya, I am with you, My family wants me to get out of here, with no planes to Seattle nonstop, without changing in Portland was bad enough, but now no planes period. I am getting to old to drive to Seattle all by myself and also there is nothing here for old people to do. Can't even go to the mall and watch people, because there are no people there to watch. Nothing for me here anymore at all. I know a lot of people that would fly to Seattle but no planes going that way, now just south, for a while anyway. Tourist flying in here and renting cars to enjoy the coast is even gone now. Boy are we isolated, and its scary to not have a way out of town if you don't drive. He did indicate that the increases were not what was being stated in this comment section. How do you think airport operators meet their expenses if not by passing on their increased costs to those using their facilities? Ask most rental property owners. In addition to the “write off” on their taxes, they recoup part of their costs with increased rent. Basic economics!

I want an immediate independent inquiry the Coos County Airport District’s commission and others involved with the Coos County Airport District, including the Executive Director of the Coos County Airport District, as to prior to the official announcement by Horizon on Friday, who knew, what they knew, and when they knew it. This came up prior to starting construction and again at the last meeting. Why did they forge ahead anyway, and why did they vote the wage and salary increases anyway? Why did they accept funds from the taxpayers of this state for the tower and other items when they were advised, prior to the Governor’s visit, of Horizons selling of the aircraft used at NB and the likelihood they would pull out? They knew! Still in their arrogance they forge ahead with their invitation only party. I want answers. Honest answers. I want to know how much they charged Horizon for the new terminal presence. As a taxpayer in the district I have a right to call for this investigation. I want to know if there is any dereliction of duty by the elected commission and the employees of the airport.

Good day, goodnight, and goodbye Coos Bay. The inability of Coos Bay and North Bend residents to cooperate, communicate, and jointly work towards common goals has been a disappointment for years. As a person who grew up in the area, attended college, returned for 15 years and subsequently left - I can say that I felt like an outsider when I was there. I refused to adopt the "beaten down" attitude so prevalent among the die hard locals. To the leaders who must now add this hurdle to their list of challenges - I wish you the best - but you are Spartans fighting an army who can see no farther than the sand that surrounds the bay. If you build it, they will come, but only if they can get there. Good luck in your endeavours to connect Coos Bay to the outside world.

I'm so sad about the loss of Horizon Air. It's just all about greed. Bandon Dunes and the Coos County Airport board just had to have more. More flights going south, taking away from Horizon revenue, a new airport adding to Horizon's rent and then subsidizing SkyWest. Is the flight south really going to be profitable enough for SkyWest to stay after the money is gone? Could that have been the reason Horizon chose not to accept the southern route?
I know that the increased fuel prices and discontinuing of the Q200 aircraft must have been the biggest factor for Horizon, but to hit them when they were down just seems to be such a shame. Could there be more negotiating? Let’s hope so.

I was at a Dept. of Aviation board meeting in Feb 2007 when Horizon indicated that North Bend was a threated market because of them shifting to larger Q400 aircraft, and Mr. Lehman was there also. This project could have been stopped before ground was broken. What a waste.

Every area needs some type of "industry" to keep it afloat. Coos Bay/North Bend has been losing 1 chance after another 2 help the area. Now it seems the only "industry" around is meth producing crack heads..nice job City-County Officials. Whatever the welfare to working class ratio is now will be even lower in the future. This terminal will rank as one of the biggest waste of money ever spent. Airport management knew two years ago that North Bend was a threatend market by Horizon, and a key to staying in the market was to keep the airlines cost down. But this new terminal increased thier costs dramatically, not just in rent, but also operational costs of getting people and luggage up the bluff. Skywest will probably pull out is a year due to low ridership. The termial was forced into play by Bandon Dunes. It should have never been built.

I have waited days for luggage that they could not ship because of a full load of passengers and golf clubs. If you want more flyers then you make room for them and use bigger planes. San Jose or Oakland are the preferred airports for domestic travel in the other bay area. San Jose area is where the money is and the golfers area. Most people traveling from this bay area are connecting with inexpensive flight to somewhere. Inexpensive airlines Southwest and Alaska from San Francisco is more expensive and a more difficult connection. Driving four hours to Portland for a flight sucks; but, check and see if you wont save hundreds of dollars doing it.

Lets get real.... It has to do compitition! The flights in and out of North Bend are almost always full, so it is not a lack of consumers. This is where our community leaders need to offer something, lower the landing fee, offer a temp tax break, something that will keep this Airline from leaving. Let me get this straight, you "knew about this threat for months?" And you just kept spending?

You can't tell me that when North Bend officials decided to construct a new terminal, costing millions, during this crisis the airlines are facing, that they didn't realize that maybe it wasn't a good idea. And to think that Horiozn would pay the rent they are asking for the new terminal, almost 10 times that of their current rent, that they would stay. Rediculous move North Bend, Rediculous move. I don't blame Horizon for leaving North Bend or Klamath Falls.

They were told this would happen at a previous meeting. Why is it a shock now. I am an Oregonian, why would I want to fly to San Francisco? I have to believe the board allowing another airline in had something to do with this decision. I hope you all enjoy your INVITATION only party on the 1st. Good chance to discuss public business out of earshot of the unwashed masses that pay for all of this boondoggle. What are you going to do with your Fish Scaled Hanger now?

The article fails to mention the Coos County Airport Board's decision to increase Horizon's terminal rent from $11,000 to $110,000 + dollars PER MONTH! The airport should've considered how important this northbound service is before they increased monthly rent tenfold. Horizon has provided reliable service to and from North Bend for years, always ranking among the best systemwide for station on time performance, and consistently operating at an 80% average load factor. Skywest is going to operate an aircraft which will consistently be too small and weigh restricted to operate efficiently from North Bend. After Skywest's one year contract is up, there is no guarantee that the South Coast will have ANY airline service. Lets see just how much of a purpose this twenty million dollar terminal will serve when our airport board cannot keep an airline operating from it. Sorta like those $1000 garbage cans. Well,at least Gary will have a really sweet office.

This is very sad news. My choice would always have been Horizon. I am flying out to CA in July and still chose Horizon even though it meant flying north. All of the money for a larger airport and now back to just one carrier. There was nothing wrong with the existing airport as it had recently been remodeled. We'll probably be ok. Mr. Lehman, what a statement!
