Tyler Mais had two home runs as The Three Rivers Sandblasters earned their first league win in an American Legion Zone 3 game, beating visiting Albany 15-12 on Thursday.
Mais led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run and later added a two-run home run in the seventh inning as the Sandblasters built up an 11-4 lead and then held on for the win.
Cole Skriver also hit a home run for the Sandblasters and also had a triple off the wall and a single. He scored twice and drove in three runs.
David King added a bases-loaded triple in the fourth inning that gave the Sandblasters a lead they never gave up. King’s triple came on a two-strike count.
“It’s nice to get that first win in league,” said Three Rivers coach Alex Morales. “It still wasn’t pretty, but in league, any time you can get a W, it’s nice.”
The Sandblasters, who are off today, had lost league games the previous three nights.
Scott Buche pitched six strong innings for the Sandblasters, giving up four runs and striking out seven hitters to pick up the win.
On offense, the Sandblasters pounded out 16 hits.
Three Rivers scored five runs in the seventh to take their 11-4 lead and then had to hold on.
John Pratt, who had hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning for the Rockets, added a grand slam in the eighth as Albany closed within 11-9. Pratt finished with four hits and seven RBIs.
Will Bussard had two hits and scored three runs for Albany. He reached base on two of the Sandblasters’ six errors.
“We pitched much better today,” Morales said. “We gave up some hits, which will happen at our park, but we really cut down on the free passes.
“At the plate, we’ve been swinging it well — a pleasant surprise. But if we are going to make any kind of run, our defense and pitching are going to have to improve. We’re capable of performing better than we have in those two aspects.”
The Sandblasters are 1-3 in league play, while Albany fell to 1-4. Those teams meet again Saturday in Albany, while Three Rivers hosts Salem, another 1-3 team, on Sunday.
