Community Sports: Fast breaks for June 21: Bandon Dunes golf benefit is today and Sunday

The annual Junior Golf Benefit at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort will be held today and Sunday from 1 p.m. to dusk at the practice center at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.

The event is a fundraiser for the resort’s junior golf program and is for the entire family. There is no participation fee, though donations are welcome.

The benefit is played on Shorty’s, the par-3 course at the practice center, and includes a closest to the pin competition, a “beat the pro” contest and raffle prizes.

For players who want to spend the entire afternoon on the course, a $20 donation is recommended.

Oregon Amateur

Marshfield graduate Jordan Sweet reached the second round of the Oregon Amateur tournament at Bend Golf and Country Club this week, but was eliminated by Southwestern Oregon Community College student Justin Kadin.

Kadin topped Sweet 3 and 2 in the second round after Sweet had beaten David Jacobsen 2 and 1.

Sweet tied for 42nd in the qualifying rounds, with a two-round total of 146.

Bandon Dunes golfers Lester Wagner and Jason Domingos both reached the match-play portion of the tournament, but were eliminated in the opening round.

Kadin and fellow Southwestern golfer Sam Ayotte both reached the match-play rounds, but Ayotte was eliminated in the first round and Kadin in the third.

Hoops tourney

Sunday is the early registration deadline for Salem Hoopla 2008, the largest of Oregon’s 3-on-3 charity basketball tournaments.

The event, scheduled for July 18-20 on Court Street in front of the Oregon State Capitol, features 40 different divisions based on age, gender and skill ability, ranging from 8-and-under age groups for boys and girls to the men’s and women’s divisions, in which the winners receive a $2,500 cash prize.

The tournament, celebrating its 10th year, draws basketball fans from around the state and benefits the YMCA.

Registrations will be accepted until July 11. Up to 3,000 participants are expected.

Links for Learning

The United Valley Christian Academy will hold its fourth-annual Links for Learning golf scramble on Saturday, July 19, at Coquille Valley Elks Lodge. The event begins with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.

The registration is $40 per person and includes lunch and a gift. A silent auction will be held throughout the event.

All proceeds go to UVCA to help fund the 2008-2009 school year. For more information, call Janet Roby at 396-4529.

2008-09 Trail Blazer Camp

The Boys & Girls Club of Southwestern Oregon will host a one-day Trail Blazer Basketball Camp on Tuesday, July 8.

Area students can join members of the Portland NBA organization for the event, which will be held at the club. At least 50 students must sign up and the cost is $35.

Golf for Health Classic

The Bandon Golf for Health Classic, a charitable golf tournament benefitting the Southern Coos Health Foundation, is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 2, at Bandon Crossings Golf Course.

Sponsorship opportunities are available and player registrations also are being accepted.

Proceeds will expand the capacity for the Southern Coos Health Foundation to advance quality local health care for residents and visitors of Bandon.
