Coos Bay fiber artist Diana Olson is exhibiting this week at a fashion show and fiber arts conference in Florida.

Convergence, a biennial conference for artists who work in fiber sponsored by the Handweavers Guild of America, opened Wednesday and runs through Saturday at the Tampa Convention Center in Tampa Beach, Fla.

The exhibit was juried by Diane Ericson, founder and owner of ReVisions, a contemporary line of fashion patterns, and an artist and designer with a background in weaving.

Oslon’s piece, “Timeless Tides,” is part of “Dance of the Flamingos,” the wearable art division of Convergence. Olson previously exhibited at the conference in 2004 in the main fashion division and in 2002 in the accessory division.

A press release described “Timeless Tides” as a three-quarter-length coat done in “mixed media crochet,” fashioned of various yarns and ribbons, crocheted in random free-form on a fiber base, lined with handpainted silk.

Ericson described her selection criteria: “The most exciting pieces for me were the ones where the maker seemed to take a risk and challenge themselves in a new direction — questioning and exploring what could be next instead of playing it safe.”

Olson has exhibited at the Coos Art Museum, Coos Bay library, Bandon hospital and in Port Orford.
