Providing a bang

Local members of the Family Ford Foundation, cohort 3, are selling fireworks at a booth at Price-N-Pride in Reedsport. Fireworks are on sale from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Wednesday; and from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.  Thursday, July 3, and Friday, July 4.

All proceeds will help fund the enhancement of Barrone Park. Donations will be accepted.

Saturday

Talking books

An Author Afternoon will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at South Slough’s Interpretive Center auditorium. April Azary Thomas will promote and sign some of her recent publications available for sale at the Friends of South Slough Bookstore and More, “Discovering the Oregon Coast” and “Discovering Nature.”   

Other events at the South Slough this weekend include:

*  Tide of the Toddlers, for children ages one to five, will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday. Children 1 to 5 years old are welcome for play and discovery in a Salty & Fresh version of the Tide of the Toddlers.  Cost is $1 per child.

* “Common Ground II,” a film about Oregon’s marine heritage, will be shown at 1 and 3 p.m. Sunday. The film was recently updated to inform the public about the marine reserve nomination process happening in Oregon.

Registration is required for all programs. For more information and to register, those interested can call 888-5558. South Slough reserve is four miles south of Charleston on Seven Devils Road.

Rhythm work

Two TaKeTiNa Rhythm Workshops will be held this summer in Coos Bay. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday and Aug. 9.

The workshops will be led by speech pathologist Oshi and psychotherapist Nancy Gordon. They are Basic Level TaKeTiNa teachers training for advanced certification.

Movie and dinner

Dinner and A Movie, an Oregon Coast Community Action benefit, will conclude at 7 p.m. Saturday with the movie “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” at the Egyptian Theatre. Tickets cost $5. Because of a sponsorship by Coos County branches of U.S. Bank, all ticket sales will go to ORCCA.

As part of Hunger Awareness Week, a percentage of every plate at participating restaraunts will be donated to ORCCA. The Empire Café will participate on tonight; and Benetti’s Restaurant will participate on Saturday.   

Every ticket sold will allow Oregon Coast Community Action to provide and distribute 35 pounds of food.

Monday

Swim lessons

The next session of swimming lessons at Mingus Park Pool will begin Monday. Classes are offered for ages 3 and up throughout the morning and between 6 and 7 p.m. The cost is $35 per two-week session. Lessons will be offered throughout July and the first week of August.

Youth can also join Guppies, the youth summer swim program.

Donations needed

Great Afternoons summer enrichment program, at the Family Resource Center in Reedsport, needs sturdy shoe boxes with lids and plastic jars with lids. They need the boxes by June 30 and the jars by July 7.

Exhibit ending

The work of artist Drew Struzan is on display at Signatures Gallery in Brookings through Monday. His work includes the latest in the Indiana Jones movie series poster. He also is the official Star Wars artist for Lucasfilm Ltd.

On display are the two Indiana Jones artists proofs, the only ones in existence. Signatures is the only gallery in the world that carries both the personal and commercial art work of Drew Struzan. These will be available for viewing through June.

Signatures Gallery is located at 519 Chetco Ave. Hours are Tuesdays through Saturday, noon to 5:30 p.m. For information, those interested can call (541) 469-1085.

Last chance

Paintings by Bandon artist Dove DoVale are on display through Monday at the Bandon Artist Supply Studio, 175 Second St., in Old Town Bandon. Most of the paintings on display are for sale; some are in the permanent collection of the artist.

DoVale studied art at Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York, and Ithaca College in London, England.

DoVale is working on a new series called “Watersongs” and a few other new projects.

BASS is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Tuesday

Merkley meeting

As part of his 100 Towns Tour for Change, Jeff Merkley will visit with political leaders and community members at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Sprague Room of the Bandon Public Library.

How to handle food

A food handler class will be offered at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Room 6 in Stikum Hall, at Southwestern Oregon Comm-unity College, 1988 Newmark Ave., Coos Bay.

Additional classes are planned for 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 10, at the Oregon State University Extension Office in the Ohlsen-Baxter Building, 631 Alder St., Myrtle Point, and 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 15 in Room 6 in the Stikum Hall.

Those taking the test should prepare by reading “Food Safety: Your Self-training Manual,” available online at http://www.oregon.gov/DHS/ph/foodsafety/ or at local libraries.

Those who pass the exam and pay the $10 fee will be issued a food handler card. The class is sponsored by Coos County Public Health.

Wednesday

Casting for crabs

The South Slough’s “Crabbing Around,” will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday. Participants will learn about the life cycle of crabs through images and interpretation as they explore the estuary for various species of crabs and cast a crab ring from the dock and learn proper crab harvesting methods. Participants will meet at the Charleston Visitor Center. The cost is $1 per person.   

Registration is required. For more information and to register, call 888-5558. The South Slough Interpretive Center, four miles south of Charleston on Seven Devils Road, is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily during the summer. It has exhibits, a gift shop and information available.

Next weekend

Riverbend music

The 12th year of the Riverbend Live concert series will open Friday, July 4, and run to Aug. 1, at Riverbend Park in Winston.

The line up will include The Oregon Coast Lab Band’s “Evolution,” HAPA, Catherine Russell, the Children’s Theater performance “When the Wolf Strikes,” and Dan Roberts and R.J. Vandygriff.

Coming soon

And all that jam

Oregon State University Extension Family Food Educators will offer a workshop on making jams, jellies, preserves and chutneys from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 12, at the OSU Extension office, the Ohlsen-Baxter Building, 631 Alder St., Myrtle Point.    

The cost is $7. Instructors also can give tips about how to make jams and jellies for the fair.
