Despite a big day from birthday boy Jesse McClintock, North Coos lost both games of an American Legion doubleheader against host Roseburg Horizon on Tuesday.
McClintock pitched a four-hitter in the opener, but didn't get enough run support in a 4-1 setback. In the nightcap, McClintock hit a grand slam and nearly hit another on his 18th birthday, but Roseburg prevailed 7-6.
The Waterfront fell to 3-5 in league games — four of the losses coming at Legion Field against Roseburg Horizon and Roseburg Pepsi. North Coos is at North Medford for a nonleague doubleheader on Thursday and at North Eugene for a league twin bill on Friday. The Waterfront hosts Sheldon in its first league home doubleheader on Sunday.
McClintock struck out six batters in the opener, but North Coos committed two errors behind him.
The Waterfront out-hit Roseburg 5-4, but got its only run in the fourth inning when Skyler Walton reached base on an error and later scored on another error.
McClintock went 3-for-3 in the second game and hit a grand slam to give North Coos an early 4-0 lead. After Roseburg went in front 7-4, McClintock almost hit another grand slam in the sixth inning, but the ball was caught at the fence, resulting in a sacrifice fly.
Walton went 2-for-4 in the nightcap. He and Jake Stevens each had doubles.

Sandblasters fall
Three Rivers was much improved in its second Zone 3 league game, but fell to host Springfield 6-5.
Springfield built a 6-2 lead and then held on after Scott Buche hit a three-run home run for the Sandblasters in the eighth inning. Joe Crowe had a two-run single for the Sandblasters in the fifth inning and had another single and scored on Buche’s blast in the eighth.
“We had a much better effort today, but we still need to get better,” said Three Rivers coach Alex Morales. “Their pitcher today, Grady Wood, controlled the tempo of the game, and we allowed him to do that.
“We’ve got to learn from that. But you’ve got to tip your hat to the kid. He went at us and pitched a great game.”
Wood allowed just five hits and struck out nine while pitching eight innings. Cody Garner got the save.
Cameron Dixon and Trevor Ryan each had two hits for the Titans. Dixon also drove in two runs.
“They were aggressive on the bases and we need to do a better job of keeping that in check,” Morales said. “We’re getting closer. Hopefully we can put together a complete game tomorrow against Richey’s.”
The Sandblasters host Richey’s Market today and the Albany Rockets on Thursday.
