This weekend Check mateThe Coquille Chess club is hosting a scholastic chess tournament and waterfest Saturday at LaVerne Park. Participants should register by 10 a.m.
The tournament is an Oregon Scholastic Chess Federation qualifier tournament and OSCF rated. Divisions will be based on ratings. Games will be played in the covered picnic area in the main park.
There will be squirt-gun fun between games. Participants should bring their own squirt gun. Only children holding squirt guns will be legal targets. The tournament will be held rain or shine. A potluck lunch is planned, although hot dogs will be supplied. Prizes will be squirt guns and water toys.
Registration costs $5.
After the tournament, weather permitting, there will be fun at the river.

Hams go campingOn Saturday and Sunday, amateur radio operators of the Coos County Radio Club will join other ham operators all over the world for Field Day. While camping this weekend, radio operators will be able to test their ability to communicate under emergency conditions.
It will run from 11 a.m. Saturday to 11 a.m. Sunday at Bastendorff Beach County Park. Both VHF and HF radio stations will be operating using only battery and generator power, homemade antennas and portable radio equipment. The public is invited to attend and learn about operating ham radios. Visitors should follow the signs to the site.
Same time this weekThe On Broadway Thespians Inc. presentation of the romantic comedy “Same Time Next Year” continues through Sunday.
Offered as another OBT dinner theater production at Gussie’s, curtain times are 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday evenings and 2 p.m. for Sunday matinees.
Directed by Cherish Merrit, the play tells the g story of a couple, George and Doris, who, while married to other people, develop a special relationship in which they meet once a year at a country inn for a weekend together. The relationship evolves into a special emotional intimacy over the course of 24 years, with heart-wrenching consequences.
Gussie’s is at 1088 Newmark Ave. across from the Empire 7-11 in Empire.
Tickets cost $10 for adults evening shows and $8 for matinees. Tickets for children under 12 cost $7 for all shows. Due to adult content, children must be accompanied by an adult or guardian.

OngoingFor the childrenSales from the fireworks stand in the Albertson’s parking lot in North Bend, 2121 Newmark St,. will benefit the children’s and youth ministries of Bay Area Church of the Nazarene. The booth is now open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and will remain open until Friday, July 4, and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 5. It will be closed on Sundays.
Education, supportThe National Alliance on Mental Illness is taking applications for a local Family-to-Family Education Program. The program offers free education and support for families who have relatives with mental illness.
The course topics will include learning about feelings and facts; schizophrenia, major depression and mania; diagnosis and dealing with critical periods; subtypes of depression and bipolar disorder; panic disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder; problem solving workshop; medications review; empathy workshop; self-care and relative groups; rehabilitation services; advocacy; fighting stigma; and a review and certification ceremony.

Next monthGoing to marketThe Bandon Little Farmers Market’s regular season will begin on Saturday, July 5. The market will run for 12 weeks, ending on Sept. 20.
In its ninth year, the market will be located at the courtyard of Tea-by-the-Sea and the Oregon Wine Tasting Room, 350 Second St.
Space is free to all vendors with homegrown and handmade items, with a suggested donation of 10 percent of overall sales at the end of the day. Each vendor will be provided with a space in the market area, a table and chair. For more information, call 347-9081 or e-mail naevans@gte.net.
