South Coast Hunger Awareness Week, a week of events designed to “foster awareness of hunger an food insecurity in the region – and to celebrate food, nutrition, family and community,” sponsored by Oregon Coast Community Action, will be held through Saturday.

Family activities

* June 22: Healthy Kids Day by OSU extension — with healthy snacks & fun games at Mingus Park, 3-4:30 p.m.

Cooking & health events

* June 23: “Nurture by Nourishing,” free class by Jardin Kazaar at Black Market Gourmet, 6 p.m.

* June 24: Free Family Food Educators canning class in Coos Bay at Park West meeting room, 1 p.m.

*June 24: Free Family Food Educators dehydration class at Port Orford 1st Community Church, 5:30 p.m.

* June 27: Free Family Food Educators canning class at the Bandon Public Library at 5 p.m.

Local author appearance

* June 23: Jayel Gibson, author of the Ancient Mirror series, will sign books & take donations at Gold Beach Books, 6 p.m.

* June 27: Jayel Gibson, will sign books & take donations for food pantries at Words & Pictures in Brookings, 1 p.m.

Future of Food Film

* June 22: A free film showing at the Coos Bay Public Library will feature “The Future of Food,” on the change in the supply of food, at 7 p.m. in the Myrtle Room.

 Learn about hunger & food

*June 23: Bobbi Stewart on “Coos Head Transitioning to a Co-op” talk in the From Ground to Globe series at Colette’s Café from 6 to 8 p.m.

 * June 23: “Food & Fuel: How global trends effect rural areas” at Bay Area Rotary, at noon at Red Lion

*  24: “Childhood Hunger & the Snack Pack Program” at Brookings Rotary at noon at Bella Italia  

* June 26: “Vulnerable Children & CASA” talk at Coquille Kiwanis at 6 p.m. at Figaros Pizza

* June 27: “Hungry Children & the Snack Pack Program” discussion at Bandon Rotary at noon, location TBA

Music events

* June 27: Country western band Stampede will host a benefit concert at 7p.m. at Dawson’s Stein Room, in Coos Bay,  $5 at the door.

 * June 28: Sobers Family Center will host an open house benefit event, in downtown Coos Bay, with fun activities, games and live music by three bands. Bring two cans of food for free admission.
