Stealing hearts

Tickets are available for Theatre 101’s  production of “Steel Magnolias.”  The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Other shows are scheduled for June 27 through July 5. Matinees are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 29, and July 4. Tickets cost $10 and are available at the Downtown Fun Zone and at the door. Tickets also can be reserved by calling (541) 332-7529.

“Steel Magnolias” is suitable for all audiences, but it has a special place in the hearts of women and those with close family ties, according to a press release.

It is set in a beauty shop in Louisiana owned by Truvy Jones (Tere Tronson). The story revolves around Shelby Eatenton (Morgan McKenzie), a diabetic about to marry a rich southern lawyer. She is the town sweetheart and a special young woman who feels that having a baby is worth risking everything, even her own life. Shelby’s mother, M’Lynn Eatenton (Stacy Romele), is a bossy but caring mother who still worries about her grown-up daughter. Other characters include Clairee Belcher (Diane Campbell Antonio), the town grande dame who loves football and gossip; Annelle Dupuy-Desoto (Signe Tronson), a very shy young woman who blooms and grows as the plot thickens; and Ouiser (pronounced “Weezer” ) (Susi Eckhardt), the town’s eccentric but lovable curmudgeon, the press release said.

Sawdust continues

The running of “Recipe for Disaster, or Camilla’s Culinary Quandary” continues this weekend as part of the 42nd season of the Sawdust Theatre in Coquille.

The show runs through Aug. 30. Performances are at 8 p.m. Saturdays and Friday, July 18 and all Fridays in August. There are two matinees at 3 p.m. Saturdays, June 28 and July 12. Tickets are $12.50.

The show is written by Cindy Robnett and Edna Cotner and directed by Cotner and Marcella Russell. Olios are directed by Robnett and Lynda Poe. The play is based on the life of Camilla Rietman, who donated to the theater and a variety of institutions in Coquille and Oregon.

Twenty-six songs, from classic to contemporary, will be performed during the concert. Scenery and video segments designed by Dan Almich will complement the singers.
