Area players contribute in All-Star series

Four South Coast players contributed to the South team winning one of three games in the Class 4A All-Star Baseball Series over the weekend.
The South won the first game 6-3, but lost both games Sunday, by 6-3 and 6-4 scores.
Ethan Ottemiller of North Bend was the primary catcher for two of the games.
“Ethan caught real well,” said North Bend coach Brad Horning, one of two coaches for the South team.
North Bend’s Kale Forrester pitched three scoreless innings in the third game and was the outstanding pitcher for the South team.
Alex Clark of North Bend had three hits for the South team, while Tyler Mais of Siuslaw had two hits. Ottemiller and Forrester each had one hit, with Forrester driving in two runs.
Basketball
Reedsport’s Hannah Smith scored 10 points to help the East to a 64-61 win in the opening game of the Class 3A basketball series.
Coquille’s Katlyn Shaw had three points, while teammates Emily Usselman and Kalei Libby and Bandon’s Becky Butler each scored two. Usselman led the East with four assists.
In the second game, the East won 67-63. Smith scored 13 points, Usselman added six, Butler had two and Libby scored one. Shaw was not able to play in the second game.
The East team was coached by Myrtle Point’s Marty Stallard.
All-State Softball
Gold Beach pitcher Molly Hockema was a first-team selection to the Class 3A All-State team after leading the Panthers to the Sunset Conference schedule. Teammate Kelsey Hamilton, an infielder, also was a first-team pick, along with Reedsport outfielder Kelsey Moore.
Reedsport shortstop Brianna Ekelund was chosen for the second team, while Gold Beach’s Emmie Yeiter was a third-team selection as a utility player. Bandon’s Becky Butler received honorable-mention recognition.
Marshfield pitcher Brittney Young was an honorable-mention selection at as a utility player for Class 5A. |
