As summer gets into full swing, Bay Area libaries have a number of reading programs available for children of all ages.

Coos Bay

The Coos Bay Library Collaborative Summer Reading Program 2008 starts June 23 and runs to Aug. 5. This year’s theme is “Catch the Reading Bug.”

Story times are at 10:30 a.m. Mondays for second through sixth grades, June 23 to July 28; and 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays for preschool through first grade, June 25 to July 30.

Programs include Independent reading and listening for prizes, preschool through fifth grade, June 23 to Aug.4; Metamorphosis at Your Library: Independent reading and listening for prizes, sixth through 12th grade, June 23 to Aug. 4.

Prizes are donated by local businesses and organizations; and Bugs and Butterflies, in which participants can write their name on one bug or butterfly for each book they read this summer, to decorate the Children’s Department.

Weekly shows for all ages will be held at 11 a.m. Thursdays in the Myrtlewood Room.

The program is sponsored by the Ford Family Foundation, the Friends of the Coos Bay Library, Oregon Library Association and Oregon Public Broadcasting.

North Bend

“Catch the Reading Bug,” the summer reading program, is going on now at the North Bend Public Library, through July 28. Kids and young adults from 3 years old through 18 can read or listen to earn prizes and chances to win in the grand prize by keeping track of the time spent reading or listening to library books. Even those who don’t read any books can enter the grand prize drawing once each day.

For more information, visit the library at 1800 Sherman Ave., call 756-0400 or visit http://www.www.cooslibraries.org/.

Myrtle Point

The Myrtle Point 2008 Summer Reading Program, “Catch the Reading Bug,” starts June 25 and wraps up July 30. It is open to young people, preschool through sixth grade.

Summer reading programs for preschool children are scheduled for from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesdays featuring stories, songs and crafts. School-aged youth are invited to come to the library on  from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesdays.

Included in the library’s program is the Oregon Summer Reading Certificate.

Children who read or listen to 10 books will earn a certificate in a statewide reading incentive program sponsored by the Oregon Department of Education, Oregon State Library, Oregon Library Association, and the Oregon Education Association.

Pre-registration for the summer reading program is not required. Drop-ins are welcome, according to Linda Kirk, children’s specialist at the Flora M. Laird Memorial Library in Myrtle Point.  “Come once, come often,” she said. “We will have lots of fun.”

The library welcomes children of all abilities. All programs are free of charge and will be held at the library at 435 Fifth St. in Myrtle Point. For more information, call the library at 572-2591 or visit http//info.cclsd.org/mpl/.

Reedsport

The Douglas County Library System summer reading program, “Catch the Reading Bug,” will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesdays at the Reedsport Branch Library, 395 Winchester Ave.

The summer reading program features reading-related programs and activities. It is designed to encourage children to visit their library, read for pleasure and maintain their reading skills during the summer, a press release said.

Children can sign up at any of the eleven public libraries in Douglas County.

When they sign up, they receive a bookbag, a bookmark and a reading log. By keeping track of their reading time during the summer, they can earn a free book and other prizes.

A new element of the 2008 Summer Reading Program is “Read to Me!” This part of the program is for toddlers and preschoolers. They can earn a free book and certificate by keeping track of the time that parents and older siblings read to them.

As part of the summer reading program, the Douglas County Library System and the Umpqua Valley Arts Association will offer four programs featuring local artists. The programs will present stories and crafts related to the summer reading theme, “Catch the Reading Bug!”

The programs run June 23 through July 25, and will be presented at each of the public libraries in the Douglas County Library System. They are free and will be about one hour long.

For more information,  call the Children’s Department, at (541) 440-4305, the Reedsport branch at 271-3500 or visit individual branches or look for program schedules and other information on the library Web site, http://dclibrary.us.
