Theatre 101 play startsTickets are on sale now for Theatre 101’s upcoming production of “Steel Magnolias.” Opening curtain is at 7:30 p.m. Friday and shows run until July 5. Tickets cost $10 and are available at the Downtown Fun Zone and at the door. Tickets also can be reserved by calling (541) 332-7529.
“Steel Magnolias” is suitable for all audiences, but has a special place in the hearts of women and those with close family ties, a press release said.
“Steel Magnolias,” by Robert Harling, is a drama washed with humor. It is set in a beauty shop in Louisiana.
SaturdayFree clothesThe monthly free clothes giveaway will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Lakeside Lions Hall, 890 Bowron Road. Where artists workThe Bay Area Artists Association presents its first Artists Studio Tour Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event features the studios of seven master artists in Coos Bay and North Bend.
The featured artists are Jerry Baron, Spencer Billington, Curt Hitch, Josie Reid, Pat Snyder, Donna and Ron Wright. The studio spaces give hints as to what inspires each artist.
Marilyn Monroe inspires one, Monet’s garden another and the view of Coos Bay another. Within the walls of each studio, these artists create their artwork.
Bay Area Artists’ Studio Tour benefits art programs sponsored by the Bay Area Artists’ Association. Special fittingBree’s “Tea @ 10” runs from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Frazier’s Bakery, 23 E. First St., Coquille.
Violet Bailey and Peggy Medina will discuss the use and fitting of mastectomy bras, breast prostheses, after-surgery garments and lymphedma sleeves for women recovering from mastectomies and lumpectomies.
After the presentations, both women will be available for individual consultations and fittings. Appointments can be made by calling 396-5811. There is no cost to attend the program.
Bree’s is a nonprofit foundation working with people in our community who are dealing with cancer.

Fighting hungerSouth Coast Hunger Awareness Week is a series of events designed to “foster awareness of hunger an food insecurity in the region – and to celebrate food, nutrition, family and community,” sponsored by Oregon Coast Community Action. Events kick off Friday and Saturday:
* Saturday: The Coos Demo-cratic party will host a food drive in Bandon, North Bend and Coquille, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. — donate canned/boxed goods.
* Saturday: Savory Natural Foods in Gold Beach & Brookings Natural Food Co-Op will gather donations of canned/boxed goods.
* Saturday: OSU Extension nutrition talk in the Park West meeting room, 10th & Anderson in Coos Bay from 1:30-3 p.m.
* Sunday: Healthy Kids Day by OSU extension — with healthy snacks & fun games at Mingus Park, 3-4:30 p.m.
n Sunday: A free film showing at the Coos Bay Public Library will feature “The Future of Food,” on the change in the supply of food, at 7 p.m. in the Myrtle Room.

Concert for teensTeens Unlimited: Helping the Homeless Teen will host a Concert in the Park beginning at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Mingus Park.

Summer moviesThe Egyptian Theatre in downtown Coos Bay will present a Saturday children’s movie matinee throughout the summer. All shows begin at 1 p.m. and the doors open at noon.
Saturday’s show will be “Ice Age” (2002). “The Sandlot” (1993) will show on Saturday, June 28 and “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” (2001) will show on July 5.
The matinees will raise money for the Egyptian Theatre Preservation Association’s restor-ation of the theatre as well as collect food for South Coast Food Share, the Oregon Coast Community Action’s regional food bank.
Ticket prices for the Saturday matinee are $3.50 for children 12 and under, $4 for adults and $3 for members. Those who bring a food item will receive $1 off the ticket price. The Egyptian Theatre Preservation Association will donate all the food collected to South Coast Food Share.
All donations taken at the door will be distributed to several local food pantries and meal sites that work to feed hungry families and individuals in our communities.

SundayMusic varietyBay Area Brass Quintet will play the next Mildred Hill Concert at 6 p.m. Sunday at Port Orford’s Zion Lutheran Church, 2015 Washington St. These five are the South Coast version of Canadian Brass. Their program is varied and entertaining, with everything from Mozart and Brahms to Jive for Five and Mississippi Rag.
Trumpeters Wilbur Jensen, who knew Mildred Hill, and Steve Moon are joined by French horn player Mark Allen, trombone player Steve Simpkins and tuba player Bill Harsh.

This will be the second of four concerts for the 2008 Mildred Hill Concert series. Mildred’s four decade ministry of music at Zion Lutheran makes these community events possible. Barbershop, Brass Quintet, Harp and Vocal Duo and solo Classical Guitar make up this year’s schedule.
