The first commercial passenger airplane to San Francisco in more than two decades will soar away from Southwest Oregon Regional Airport at 5 p.m. on July 7.

Residents and visitors will be treated to a day-long grand-opening celebration of the new SkyWest United Express service throughout that day, culminating with the send-off.

The following day, SkyWest will begin flying two direct flights per day between the North Bend airport and San Francisco International Airport. Previously, visitors to the Coos Bay area had only one carrier option for air travel, by way of Portland.

“We are thrilled to announce a new transportation option to and from Oregon’s southern coast,” said Ron Opitz, executive director of the South Coast Development Council, in a press release. “This service will not only be incredibly convenient for recreational travelers coming to experience all that the area has to offer, but also for local residents and business travelers wanting an easier departure point to visit San Francisco and beyond.”

The July 7 event will feature community activities, promotional giveaways, food and entertainment, as well as guided tours of the newly-built terminal and opportunities to learn more about the airport’s flight services.

Plans for the new San Francisco-Coos Bay flight options have been in development for more than two years and will provide many visitors a shorter travel day to reach the coastal region. Airline tickets are on sale. Those interested can purchase tickets online at www.united.com.

Coinciding with the launch of SkyWest United Express flight service is the opening of the new $20-million terminal at the airport. An invitation-only terminal dedication party will be held on July 1, with the terminal scheduled to open within the next couple of days.

If even 10 cents of public (or taxpayer) money is used it is a public event. This is not the private domain of the board and their friends. They shoved this ghastly green scaled elephant, wannabe Blimp Hanger, down our throats, and any opening should be public. I do not approve of an invitation only event. If all are not welcome, then no one is. The builders, board members and dignitaries can join the unwashed masses or stay home. Invitation only, what bull and what a boondoggle.

Colfax - get a grip. I think that the invitation only dedication party is a great idea. Frankly in this town you cannot do a "free" event like this because most of the people would show up for the free food and never step foot back into the terminal again!

I hope the “invitation-only terminal dedication party” is not being paid for by public money since the public cannot attend.
