Taking the chess challenge
Tuesday, June 17, 2008 11:55 AM PDT
It was the last major chess tournament of the season. The pressure was on for several Coquille chess players who traveled to Gresham for the competition.
Eighth-grader Jessi Ross played in the Susan Polgar State Qualifier event to try to win the title of Oregon Girls Champion and the opportunity to attend the invitational National Girls Tournament in Chicago.
Despite a well-executed chess game, she was unable to defeat the state title holder. Jessi tied for second place.
During the event, Kaitlyn Davidson, Emily Clemons, Cassie Daily and Nataleena Daily were playing in the Northwest Girls’ Challenge. Cassie Daily won first place in the fourth-grade-and-under section. |
