ALBANY, N.Y. — New York City officials confirmed the New York Yankees may be interested in seeking more public financing to build their new stadium, pending a regulation change by the IRS.

The team stressed, however, that its bid to change the Internal Revenue Service regulation wasn’t going to affect the completion of the new Bronx stadium.

Janel Patterson, of the New York City Economic Development Corp., which is working with the Yankees, said the project isn’t threatened. But she said the city is working to relieve an IRS regulation that prohibits more public debt to be incurred for the $1.3 billion stadium which is scheduled to open next year across from the historic current stadium.

Fan wants Ken Griffey Jr. to

get 600th home run ball

MIAMI — The Florida Marlins fan who says he was the first to catch Ken Griffey Jr.’s 600th home run ball said he hopes it winds up in the Cincinnati slugger’s possession.

Justin Kimball, 25, also wants a Miami-Dade court to prevent the fan who the Marlins say caught the ball on Monday night — a season-ticket holder identified only as “Joe” — from selling it until the ownership issue can be resolved.

It could not be determined if Kimball had filed anything in court. An after-hours call to his attorney’s office was not answered.

CINCINNATI — Albert Pujols is expected to miss at least three weeks with a strained left calf, a major setback to a St. Louis Cardinals team already thinned by injuries.

The first baseman injured his calf while running out a ground ball during a 7-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night. He flew to St. Louis for tests that indicated a strain rather than a severe tear, as initially feared.

He will start therapy in the next few days. The Cardinals want to be sure the calf is fully healed before he plays again.

Saints’ Smith one of NFL’s highest-paid defensive players

NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith has signed a contract extension that will make him one of the NFL’s highest-paid defensive players.

Smith signed a six-year deal worth about $70 million, according to a person familiar with the deal who requested anonymity because the terms had not been made public. The deal makes Smith the NFL’s third-highest paid defensive end, behind Minnesota’s Jared Allen and Indianapolis’ Dwight Freeney.

Former Raiders coach Jon Rauch dies at the age of 80

ATLANTA — John Rauch, the former Georgia quarterback who coached the Oakland Raiders to a berth in the second Super Bowl, died Tuesday at his home in Oldsmar, Fla. He was 80.

Rauch’s wife, Jane, said Rauch died in his sleep, possibly due to a heart problem.

Rauch was 33-8-1 in three season as the Raiders’ coach from 1966-68. He also served as head coach of the Buffalo Bills for two years and was an assistant coach with Philadelphia and Atlanta.

“Our hearts go out to his family who we knew well,” the Raiders said in a statement. “John Rauch gave us several great years as an assistant and head coach for the Oakland Raiders and he took us to our first Super Bowl in 1967. They were memorable years for the Raiders and they will never be forgotten and they should not be forgotten.”

Burress wants new contract

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Plaxico Burress isn’t going to practice with the New York Giants until the Super Bowl champions give him a new contract.

Burress reported to the Giants’ mandatory minicamp but refused to work out because he wasn’t happy with the way contract negotiations are progressing between the team and agent Drew Rosenhaus.

Coach Tom Coughlin had indicated after practice that Burress did not work out because of a knee injury, but the receiver said he was healthy.

Sharks hire former Red Wings assistant as head coach

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Sharks hired former Detroit Red Wings assistant Todd McLellan as their head coach, bringing in a leader with Stanley Cup winning credentials to replace the fired Ron Wilson.

McLellan spent the past three seasons as an assistant in Detroit, where he was considered a bright offensive coach who led Detroit’s power-play units. The Red Wings had the NHL’s top power play in McLellan’s first season, and the second best over his three-year tenure at 20.1 percent.

Coach Babcock signs on for three more years with Red Wings

DETROIT — Mike Babcock helped bring the Stanley Cup back to Detroit. In turn, Red Wings ownership is bringing Babcock back for three more years.

The Cup-winning coach agreed to a three-year contract with the Red Wings worth about $4.5 million.

Babcock led Detroit to a title in his third season. During that time, the Wings twice have had the most points in the regular season.

Canucks forward Linden retires

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — Vancouver Canucks forward Trevor Linden retired from the NHL, 20 years to the day after the team drafted him into the league.

Chosen second overall behind only Dallas’ Mike Modano in the 1988 draft, Linden spent 16 of his 19 seasons in Vancouver, where he was the face of the franchise for most of the past two decades.

The 38-year-old Linden played 1,140 of his 1,382 games, and recorded 733 of his 867 career points, with the Canucks. He finishes with a franchise-record 415 assists, second to only Markus Naslund with 318 goals, and as the team’s career playoff leader with 118 games, 34 goals and 95 points.

NASCARchief says supervisors didn’t knew about discrimination

CONCORD, N.C. — NASCAR chairman Brian France denied that a former official complained to her supervisors about racial and sexual discrimination, claims she alleged led to her eventual firing.

Mauricia Grant filed a $225 million suit against NASCAR on Tuesday, alleging racial discrimination, sexual harassment and retaliatory termination. Grant, who is black, worked as a technical inspector for NASCAR’s second-tier Nationwide Series.

France said the detailed filing was the first NASCAR learned of her claims.
