All-star games give area athletes another shot at the spotlight

A number of seniors who graduated in the past few weeks are participating in summer all-star events over the coming days.
Class 4A baseball
North Bend coach Brad Horning will head the South Team in the Sterling Savings Bank Class 4A baseball all-star series, to be played Saturday and Sunday at Legion Field in Roseburg.
The teams will play a nine-inning game Saturday at 7 p.m. and a doubleheader Sunday, starting at noon. Admission is $5 for adults and high school students and $3 for younger students each day.
North Bend’s Ethan Ottemiller, Alex Clark and Kale Forrester are on the South Team, along with Tyler Parke from Brookings-Harbor and Tyler Mais from Siuslaw.
Class 3A girls basketball
Five players from the South Coast are competing this weekend in the Class 4A, Class 3A and Class 2A all-star series.
Myrtle Point coach Marty Stallard is leading one of the Class 3A teams, and will have Reedsport’s Hannah Smith, Bandon’s Becky Butler and the Coquille trio of Emily Usselman, Kalei Libby and Katlyn Shaw on his roster.
Friday’s games are at Corban College in Salem, with Class 4A at 4 p.m., Class 2A at 6 p.m. and Class 3A at 8 p.m.
On Saturday, the games are at George Fox University in Newberg with Class 4A at noon, Class 2A at 2 p.m. and Class 3A at 4 p.m.
Class 5A and 4A boys basketball
Marshfield’s Brogan Oswald will play on the Class 5A South Team in the Gatorade All-Star basketball series on June 20-21.
North Bend’s Luke Clark will play in the Class 4A games. Teammate Elliot Adams also was chosen, but is on vacation in Hawaii and likely won’t be able to participate, North Bend coach John Olson said.
The teams play at Northwest Christian College in Eugene the first day and Clackamas Community College in Oregon City the next. The Class 4A game is at 5 p.m., with the Class 6A game at 5:45 p.m., each day.
Class 3A softball
Becky Butler from Bandon, Kelsey Hamilton from Gold Beach and Brianna Ekelund and Kelsey Moore from Reedsport were chosen for the Class 3A all-star softball series, to be played in a doubleheader on June 22 at Valley Catholic High School in Beaverton.
Emmie Yeiter of Gold Beach is an alternate.
Gold Beach coach Jerry Ross will help lead one of the teams.
Class 3A-2A-1A baseball
Myrtle Point’s Jake Stevens, who graduated from Powers, but played baseball for the Bobcats because the Cruisers don’t have a team, had an RBI triple and a run in the first game of the Class 3A-2A-1A East-West baseball all-star series, though the East team lost 8-6.
The East won the second game 2-1 and the third game 7-1
Gold Beach’s Mitch McDonald was an alternate for the team.
Class 1A basketball
Jake Stevens of Powers and Sean-Paul Wagner and Michael Manning of Pacific will play in the Class 1A boys all-star basketball series on June 26-27 at Sisters.
They will play on the Skyline/Mountain Valley team.
Pacific’s Perry Ashdown and Willy Wayrynen are alternates for the team.
Pacific’s Natalie Manning will take part in the Class 1A girls all-star series the same two days.
The four teams, each consisting of players from two leagues, will compete in the semifinals on Friday and then the champion and third-place games on Saturday.

Mason Lieuallen and Thomas Wagner of Powers will play in the Oregon 8-man football classic on June 21 at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande. Kick-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
