Southwestern Oregon Community College President Judith Hansen’s employees are unhappy with her. Wielding their most powerful, though symbolic, form of opposition, college faculty passed a vote of no-confidence in Hansen on Tuesday. They also urged the Board of Education to pursue an investigation of her conduct.

The vote was relayed to the board. Only the board can decide to proceed with an investigation or terminate Hansen’s contract.

A two-question ballot was mailed to 80 general faculty last week with a deadline of 4 p.m. Tuesday to respond.

According to Faculty Senate Chairman Bob Fields, 53 votes supported the no-confidence vote, 15 were against and three abstained. Nine faculty members did not return their ballots.

In addition to the no-confidence vote, faculty encouraged the board to proceed with an Oregon School Boards Association-led investigation.

On that vote, there were 62 yes votes, seven no votes and two abstentions, Fields said.

Ballots were sent to all full-time faculty, department directors, academic deans and vice presidents. One also was sent to Hansen.

Hansen e-mailed board members the results of the vote as soon as she received the totals.

“I’m sad that our college is experiencing some misunderstandings and I’m looking forward to resolving them,” Hansen said.

At a meeting last week, the board decided to hire a team of consultants to collect testimony about the college’s working environment.

It is obvious that one blogger is sending several messages under many pseudonyms in an attempt to fool the readers. It shows great disrespect to refer to our College's President as anything other than Dr. Hansen or Judith unless she invites you to do so. Your disrespect does not strengthen any claim you might make but instead shows the need to deal with problem employess at the College.

It's a community college not a major university! We don't live in a hot bed of economics either.Maybe we need to close it down since it appears neither faculty, students or administration are happy. People have been complaining about this place too long and it is time to let it go!!! Move on to greener pastures people.

Former Student wrote on Jun 12, 2008 8:18 PM:

I am a former student of SWOCC and out of the 10 instructors I had, only two of them were worth the money I paid. I got so tired of hearing about faculty's personal life and problems, never finding my instructors in their office during their office hours. The faculty had their pets, no doubt! If Dr. Hansen is trying to change all of this, more power to her! I vote no confidence in most of the faculty!

In a weeks time the no confidence votes will be passed by MASC, faculty and classified employees. Why are you still here jh and why has the board not canned you???

Now that the overwhelming majority of the faculty, staff and administration have voted no confidence in President Hansen, the board needs to either conduct an independent investigation or start looking for a new president. The few supporters of the status quo who are left must stop passing off the college's difficulties to a group of unhappy individuals. Listen to the folks who do the work of the college and have chosen to speak out at a time when the climate of fear at the college has everyone worried about being fired for ringing an alarm. I am impressed by their courage and by their commitment to the college. Now it is the board's turn to do its job.

I don't know all of the details, but I think that I sure wouldn't want to stay in a place where I was that disliked and disrespected. Maybe Judy should consider moving on. Coos County is a small place and people don't forgive or forget around here too easily. No matter what the outcome of the consultant, she will have an up-hill battle going forward. If Judy has upset or treated badly just a handful of people, between that person, their friends and relatives in town, she might as well consider that she has offended a third of the town in one way or the other.

Let me see if I can perhaps spell a tad bit better than some of these people. Ever notice the one's who are against Dr. Hansen cannot spell? Faculty does not like Dr. Hansen because she is making them work for their paycheck. I've noticed a change for the better since she has been there. I vote no confidence in the Board.
Everyone on here is so brave, yet they won't use their own names. HMMMM.

I am a former Student from there and that was when Steven Kridelbaugh was the President. I remember the student body did not think too much of him either. I was going to school on the Ch31 Vets Voc Rehab program and even the VA reps were not too impressed. I wonder if the V.A. pulled their student clients and funding from there due to Judy Hansen's decisions? Be interesting to know!!!

Hpeful wrote on Jun 11, 2008 10:05 PM:

I am sad about the many supporters that are willing to live with lies and deceit. Where are your morals, let alone your humanity? Are you willing to foresake your humanity for a charleton? A President that lies publicly and then wonders with her staff about why people are so upset? It was not 66% of the faculty that voted for no confidence, it was 75%. So much for the truth. You sound like a Bush supporter to me: lies, lies, and mor lies and let's go to War - looks like 2002 in Florida. Except Hansen will destroy the College while she goes to War and leaves this College in desparate straights. And, she has only been here for five years - what a wondeful record. Peace.

One now wonders how much these issues came into play regarding the sudden resignation of Bob Gregson as Executive Chef of OCCI. This, after the new building was finally complete.

Boy, a surprising minority really love to defend this person (in previous stories on this website), and the abhorrent job she's done for the school.

I was a student when she became the President of the college, and I can tell you that a lot of people (students and faculty) weren't thrilled with the decision. Now, it turns out like they were certainly in the right.

nile wrote on Jun 11, 2008 12:15 PM:

dearest judy,
Not to be cliche but "denile is not just a river"! Do you really think it is a misunderstanding?? You push people around with a "manic" air in my opinion and I work for you. Wake up lady! This is Independence all over. Doesn't it seem familliar?

against change wrote on Jun 11, 2008 11:34 AM:

Never mind that even the best leader in the best of times will only gather a maximum of 80% "confidence" when it comes to a vote....66.25% of the faculty voted against Dr. Hansen! I say out with change and in with the status quo!!
