A man died and a woman was sent to Portland with serious burns after a fire destroyed their mobile home Saturday in Lakeside.

According to Deputy State Fire Marshal Keith Brown, Sidney J. Chapman, 81, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other resident, Olive Chapman, age unavailable, was flown to Portland with second- and third-degree burns. No information about her condition was available at press time.

According to Lakeside Fire Chief Ted Ross, at about 6:08 a.m., 20 firefighters responded to a report of a fire at 1010 Bowron Road. By the time they arrived at 6:14 a.m., the single-wide mobile home was fully aflame.

“All the windows were broken out of the home and the fire was well in progress,” said Ross.

Personnel quickly knocked down the flames with a foam-water mixture, but the building was a total loss.

When the fire started, Olive Chapman escaped through a bedroom window. Sidney Chapman was found in the front portion of the house. Ross said he died of smoke inhalation.

Brown said the fire was caused by an overloaded electrical circuit.

“It was covered by stored items so it couldn’t disperse heat,” he said.

Brown said the mobile home was built with materials that burn very quickly and the only reason some walls are still standing is because of the fire department’s quick response.
