Friday Foreign film showingThe Friday Foreign Film series at Coos Bay Public Library will continue at 7 p.m. on Friday. This month’s feature is “Osama” (2003), an international co-production between companies in Afghanistan, the Netherlands, Japan, Ireland and Iran, and the first film shot entirely in Afghanistan film shot since the rise and fall of the Taliban.
Inspired by a true story, it is a tale which centers on three generations of women, deeply affected by the advent of the Taliban’s rule in their land. Golbahari, a 12-year-old Afghan girl, and her mother lose their jobs when this new regime closes the hospital where they work. As the Taliban has already begun to take over Afghanistan, the country’s women find themselves forbidden to leave their houses without a “legal companion” —specifically, a boy or a man. With both her husband and brother dead, there is no one left to support the family — and without being able to leave the house, the mother is left with nowhere to turn.
Feeling she has no other choice, she disguises Golbahari as a boy. Now called Osama, the girl is called by the Taliban to join the school and military training and embarks on a terrifying and confusing journey as she tries to keep the Taliban from discovering her secret.
In the end, the girl’s own physiology defies her to reveal her true identity. As a result of her monumental lie, she is put on trial in front of the Taliban court and sentenced to marry an old Mullah. Upon arriving at his home, the destitute girl discovers he has three other wives — and she’s forced to join them in their miserable world.
The film received an honorable mention at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival and was the winner of the Golden Globe for best foreign film. The Friday Foreign Film series is held on the second Friday of the month and is free to the public. Many of these films are not rated and parental discretion is advised.
