The Coos County Sheriff’s Office has released the names of two Coos Bay men believed to be involved in the massacre of one very large wooden fish.

Charlie the Tuna, an 8-foot tall statue that greeted residents and visitors from its home on the east side of the  South Slough Bridge, is literally in pieces after deputies found men sawing it apart on property up the Coos River in the Daniel’s Creek area.

According to a Coos County Sheriff’s Office press release, deputies received an anonymous tip from a concerned citizen on Friday afternoon on the location of the statue. Deputies went to a small hillside farm and spoke to the owner. They received permission to search the property, where they found four people — two men and two teenage boys — with the statue. Deputies said they witnessed two of the subjects slashing the statue into pieces with a chain saw. Upon investigation, deputies arrested Marvin L. Terry, 21, and Mark C. Santos, 21, on first-degree theft and second-degree criminal mischief charges.

According to an e-mail from Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Pat Downing, the investigation is continuing to determine the involvement of the boys. At this time they have not been charged with any crime. Law enforcement officers believe the men stole Charlie while under the influence of intoxicants and chose to cut up the statue after reading local media reports and worrying about the consequences.

Terry and Santos were taken to the Coos County jail and were later released on their own recognizance.

The point of this story is not that "Charlie" was a great masterpiece sculpture, but the fact two scumbags thought that stealing something was funny, and they will probably get away with it. Next time they are stealing something it will probably be something bigger and worth more, because they will know they will probably get away with it.

The "boys" they are referring to are the two teenage boys found with the men. It states clearly they found FOUR people, two men and two teenage BOYS.

It's the two boys that haven't been charged, the two MEN have been, on first-degree theft and second-degree criminal mischief charges. They believe the MEN stole the statue, not sure what the BOYS have done yet.

It might be time to get your eyes checked.

Re-read the article above, you'll see that there were actually FOUR males caught. TWO were 21, and the other TWO were under 18 (hence the word "teenage"). The article calls these two teenagers "Boys". Reading comprehension, it used to be taught in the bay area, too bad.

DRIVER - I understood the story to say that they found 4 people - 2 men and 2 boys - cutting up the statue. The 2 MEN, Marvin L. Terry, 21, and Mark C. Santos, 21 were arrested and the investigation is continuing to determine the involvement of the BOYS. At this time they (the BOYS) have not been charged with any crime.

I totally agree with "what is this town coming to?" and then some!!

So... they call 21 year olds 'boys'
According to an e-mail from Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Pat Downing, the investigation is continuing to determine the involvement of the boys. What is wrong with this statement:

At this time they have not been charged with any crime. Law enforcement officers believe the men stole Charlie while under the influence of intoxicants and chose to cut up the statue after reading local media reports and worrying about the consequences.

No charges for a crime committed - and they may have been under the influence - gee so that makes it ok to steel - and try to destroy the evidence - since they were scared little boys and did not want to get into trouble.

Gee people - what is this town coming to?

Wow, wouldn't it be great if the police in this town were as worried about rapists and drug dealers as they were about this wooden statue? Pretty ridiculous if you ask me.
